       Overdrive too much?

I have a series 1 with a 200tdi as my daily driver. It has
disco diffs and is running on 750's I am thinking of getting an
       overdrive for the motorway runs.
       Some people say......
It will be on its knees and struggle with an overdrive.
       What are your thoughts?

I used to run a 109SW with tdi and Rangy diffs + OD. No problem,
even towing up to 1T on the hook. Cruised at 70 all day long and
OD is really useful for 30mph. You will notice that it can be a
bit low for 4th and a bit revvy in 3rd. 3rd OD is just right.

       Bollocks.
       200TDI + Disco diffs + Overdrive + 750's = Happy me.

I think those some people were probably referring to standard 4
cylinder engines that were fitted. It's renowned that if you
did that, then it would be on it's knee's. I fitted 7.50's to
the SWB a couple of years ago, standard 2 1/4 petrol, with OD
and 3.54 diffs (at the time) and went all the way to the other
side of Wales and back (about 150 mile each way) and did not
       engage the OD once.

Yep, fairly standard setup now for a lot of us with 200TDi -
       7.50s, 3.54 diffs and overdrive.
Ok, you can't really pull in overdrive unless you are going more
than 50mph, but get it up to 55, nick it into overdrive and the
whole world (or at least your vehicle) becomes a much more quiet
and relaxed place to be :smilewide:
I find if I stick to 55mph, I do occasionally have to drop out
of overdrive for some motorway hills, but at 60-65mph and it
will go up hill and down dale in overdrive.
Oh, and with that setup, Patrick's Carawagon, fully laden for
expedition with big roofbox, averaged almost 40mpg over a 5000+
       mile Morocco jaunt
       Cheers,
       Robin.

Similar to a V8. Definitely need overdrive with 3.54s and 7.50s.
Feels great burning up some twat who's been tailgating and then
       overtaken you
