Vineyard mono-rail

We have just come back from a few days in Germany and Holland.
In particular, we wanted to go back to Cochem and the Mosel
valley, as we last camped there about 28 years ago! This area is
famous for its wines, and the whole valley is covered in vines.
The sides of the valley are particularly steep, and I noticed
several growers now seem to have installed small mono-rail
systems. They must be terrifying to use though, as the climbs
are so steep as you can see from the tracks in the photos
below......

Continuing the 'railway' theme in Cochem, this is the new Kaiser
Wilhelm Tunnel being put through the hillside next to the
original. A nice contract for Balfour Beatty judging by the
banners around the site!

As you can see, the seperate frontage of the old tunnel has been
heavily braced up while the work takes place.

Looking at the monorail pics I though what a ride it must be
when you are reversing down the slopes on that funny-looking
seat - some of the bends look interesting :o

I've seen those little industrial monorails before, we've even
had some featured on here, but a rack monorail is a new one on
me. Good find. :thumbs:

I was just impressed by the gradients that they appear to
traverse! Talk about changing your lederhosen on the way back
down........
