Fitting gauges 200tdi - series

Having a 200tdi engine with a series radiator and no fannage
except switch operated leccy one [ from a VW ?] drives me
into overheating paranoia in slow moving traffic and long slow
hills. The series temperature gauge is not compatible with the
tdi sender and the needle never rises from the stop. I
determined to fit mechanical gauges, temp and oil pressure and
bought some TIM brand from Demon Tweeks.
The first problem was the adaptors supplied with the
temperature gauge did not fit the 200tdi. A bit of forum
pirating showed that for some reason the LR engineers decided
that an unusual M16 x 1 fine thread would be the very thing
whilst most sane folk were using M16 x 1.5 thread. A
suitable adaptor was not to be found, and people on other
forums were talking about drilling out the insulator etc on the
original sender and re-tapping 5/8unf which is a common sender
thread. So I put the gauge back in it's box and on the shelf
until a Guru, Maharishi Strang, suggested I contacted Steve
Parker. Indeed Mr Parker seems to be the only person
producing a M16x1 adaptor, and it comes complete with a Series
sender, I didn't need that so it's in the spares box for the
S3.
It may seem a grandmother suck eggs to some here but to me it
was a real pain in the arse.

Top the sender from my S 3 5/8unf Middle the Disco sender
Bottom the Steve Parker.
It seemed to me drilling out the red bit from the Disco and
re-tapping for the series wouldn't have left much meat on the
bone for tightening up properly

The oil gauge was a doddle, just take out the oil warning light
sender, the orange bit peeking there, screw in a t piece, screw
the sender back into the tee piece and screw the gauge sender
with it's fine copper pipe into the side of the tee piece.

The temp gauge on my 1981 s3 is just connected to the sender on
the 200di that's currently under the bonnet and seems to work
fine. Sits in the middle of the gauge when at normal operating
temp. Haven't got a fan fitted but intend to when the blower
goes back on (soon).

Interesting, Clunkster. I've already got the SP adapter piece
for the normal electrical temp. sender but would prefer the
mechanical type. I've got one with a bulb and capillary tube but
I'm not sure if it'll fit in the housing but I see you've fitted
yours there. So, the bit that goes into the temp. sender - how
long is it?

Well Boss, the bulb on the gauge I fitted was at least twice as
long as the tdi one I removed perhaps 2" which was an
advantage as the SP adapter is longer than standard and the
nose of a short bulb would be shrouded by the adapter not sure
if that would make a difference as it would still get the heat.
The chamber it goes into is just empty space so a much longer
bulb could be fisted fitted without fouling the thermostat.

Cheers. I might have a go at fitting it cos the electrical one
seems to be bolloxed.

The electric sender from the 2.25 will work ok with the correct
adapter...think they where fitted to the 2.5 petrol.

Steve mentioned the coarse and fine threads when I bought my
adapter a few years ago now. Never seen anyone else mention it
until here! Mine has the more common 'fine' thread (1.0mm pitch)
