obviously someone bodged it badly in the past, i always use
exhaust gaskets where required
only paste the slip joints or the occaisional plain steel
gasket/seal if the manifold is looking a little too pitted
whereit joins the downpipe
DO NOT use it before a catalytic converter, apparently if any
hits the cat' it sets up a damage process that destroys it,
whether that's true i don't know but to me it's not worth the
risk

Job done...
Fitted a genuine exhaust gasket... Not without PO induced issues
though... >:(
When I took the manifold off there was the remains of a 1/3rd of
the old gasket evenly distributed across the inlet and exhaust
manfolds along with, what seemed like, a tube of bathroom
silicon sealer... Cleaned up head and manifolds, then split the
manifolds and re-aligned the faces to the block and retightened
manifolds with a new hotspot gasket. The inlet and the exhaust
manifolds were totally out of alignment!!!
The PO had also gone to the trouble of using metric bolts in an
imperial head for several fixings, also used bolts that were too
long with a collection of lock and flat washers. So the job was
extended by having to chase around Kent getting the right lenght
bolts, studs and nuts...
Worth it though, now sounds like a swiss watch at idle ;D

For what it's worth, mine has no exhaust gasket between the
manifold and head and I just used copperslip to seal it, seemed
a cheaper way to do it than get the proper stuff so I thought I
give it a try as the copperslip just seemed to be a cheapo
version of the Rocol and it's been like that now for maybe 5 or
6 years and is still okay, no leaks at all where it joins the
head.

One piece gasket for my 1983 series 3 Lightweight 2.25 petrol.
Just as a passing comment, mine failed on an exhaust leak
between the downpipe and exhaust manifold. I removed the
manifold ( hence new one piece gasket ) and replaced the three
studs that secure the downpipe with brass nuts. The guy at the
exhaust centre informed me that they use silicone goo for this
junction and other parts of the exhaust as well. I asked where
would I obtain this 'special' silicone ( as I'd never heard of
using silicone to seal an exhaust before ) and he said it was OK
to use any type !! Didn't need any in the end as the downpipe
seal was gas tight when bolted up and he passed the M.O.T. :)

Hi everyone,
This is an old thread, but I have the same problem on my 1978
petrol S3.
The exhaust manifold to head gasket has blown - I can see the
remains of a gasket poking out from the gap. I'm not convinced
that the inlet manifold is air tight either, so want to sort out
both items
Reading the official parts manual, it only shows inlet gaskets.
Reading this thread there seems to be (at least) 3 different
recommendations:
1) a 1 piece gasket (cheap enough, so I have one on order)
2) only inlet gaskets, nothing on the exhaust
3) no gasket, but copper slip on both
If I go down the no exhaust gasket route, is it possible to
re-align the two manifolds to get them level to the head by
loosening the bolts that join them (hot box?)?
Any other pointers or things I need to think about before
getting under the bonnet?

i think its universally considered a good idea to use the one
piece composite gasket

Yes, you definitely should loosen the four bolts that hold the
two manifolds together (the hot box as you called it). This
enables you to get the faces of both manifolds flush with the
head.
