Exhaust Manifold - Am I reading this right!!!
       By: mwy1964 Date: January 19, 2012, 7:16 am

All, I have an annoying leak from the exhaust manifold when
cold... So much so that you can see the exhaust fumes in the
       engine bay...
So having read through the Haynes book of lies and the Green
Bible it states that there are no exhaust manifold gaskets and
that you are to use Rocol Anti Seize Compound Foliac J166
       (Paste).. WTF :-\
A google search seems to show potential answers but the links
are not working, ones on the old site...
So open to ideas or suggestions as the PO has used silicon
       sealer which has blown out...
       Thanks in advance..
       Mark

A bit of exhaust paste should do it.
Silicone sealer is for upvc windows and baths.

The earlier ones had a gasket
The later LR's (not sure when they changed) did away with a
combined gasket and used metal gaskets on the inlets and the
exhaust was direct to the block

Thanks for that.. Agree on the silicon sealer the manifold is
       proof..
Craddocks and a few others list 274171 as a gasket for all
       series..

Silicone sealer, never heard of that one before on an exhaust,
some people do make you wonder :o
Thought mine was bad as a p/o had used nyloc nuts instead of the
brass ones on the manifold down pipe which equalled instant
       sheared bolts::)

i think you can actually get a high temperature silicone
nowadays for exhaust bodging but i'd be sceptical of using it on
the actual manifold due to the higher temperatures there
further down the exhaust on cooler joints possibly
i've not personally used it and see no reason to as silicone can
slowly go off in the tube once opened, whereas a tub of gasket
paste can be looked after just by adding a little water to it to
keep the paste soft and usable at a later date

Which bit of the manifold is leaking? block joint or exhaust
joint or does it have a crack?
       what engine is it?
have you tried one of these

What makes you think that ... its nothing special, its a
       standard S2 gasket ???

The earlier ones had a gasket As far as I know all the series
Land Rovers had a manifold gasket?
The later LR's (not sure when they changed) did away with a
combined gasket and used metal gaskets on the inlets and the
exhaust was direct to the block ? never come across a series
cast manifold direct to a cast head without some sort of gasket
as an original fitment? although I have seen the single gaskets
sold for the inlet only but was under the impression the exhaust
were also fitted as single items too, so a complete set would
have been 5 units in all instead of the one piece items in the
       links shown?
And I dont think it is anything special, only your reply and
mine actually mentions a gasket being fitted all the others
talked about assembly paste of some type or silicon base instant
gasket when the standard fit gasket cost pence and has worked
       very well for years.......
So just answering the question and giving a couple of options,
although we still don't know what is actually blowing?

The manifold to head joint is leaking...
I can see a gasket between the inlet manifold and the head, but
nothing but the remains of a shed-load of silicon sealer around
       the exhaust ports to head..
I have ordered a genuine exhaust gasket 274171 from my local
Land Rover dealer Friday for delivery Monday am... Their system
shows this for Series 2 through to 2.5 90..
It will be one of the first jobs I do next week as it is blowing
badly now after another 50mile blast on the M20 today.
