Choo Choos and bits

i like looking but know nothing about them so being as i was in
Kent this past weekend and we took a trip to the local steam
powered line i thought i'd share a few pictures with those of
you that are that little more enthusiastic

sorry about the rubbish quality but i am just a snapper that's
just hoping you find something of interest among those pictures
(the little black engine is one of only six left apparently)

The most interesting to me is the first one. That was built in
Hunslet, Leeds to a design for the War Department and commonly
known as an Austerity. The name Holman F Stephens refers to the
one time owner of the K&ESR, a.k.a. Colonel Stephens. Before the
war he ran several light railways on a shoestring, using second
hand equipment and make do and mend principles. He'd probably
have made a good series owner. ;D

Colonel Stephens had a good salvage and mend approach according
to the information boards that were put up there, they made
quite interesting reading

Au contraire Blackadder, there are lots of surviving Terriers. I
got to drive Martello a few years ago and they are cracking
little engines! I am not sure how many are in traffic at the
moment, and Waddon is abroad.
According to Crappypedia:
40 Brighton (preserved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway as W11
Newport )
46 Newington (preserved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway as W8
Freshwater )
50 Whitechapel (preserved at the Spa Valley Railway as no. 32650
Sutton )
54 Waddon (preserved at the Canadian Railway Museum)
55 Stepney (preserved at the Bluebell Railway)
62 Martello (preserved at the Bressingham Steam Museum as 662
Martello ; as 32662 from May 2011)
70 Poplar (preserved at the Kent & East Sussex Railway as 3
Bodiam ; as 32670 from April 2011)
72 Fenchurch (preserved at the Bluebell Railway as 672 Fenchurch
)
78 Knowle (preserved at the Kent & East Sussex Railway as 32678)
They became obsolete early on due to their small size, but lots
were sold on to such as the KESR, the Freshwater, Yarmouth and
Newport Railway etc. Some were kept for the Hayling branch, and
some were used as works shunters.
Austerities are big an powerful industrials, but are a bit rough
and ready.
Now that Pullman with the matchboard sides is the real thing,
quite an oldie with a wooden body frame. Our 1872 family saloon
at the Midland Railway was built by Metropolitan RCW Co. - it
has little enamel plates on the door rails with the makers name
on, there are several other vehicles in our collection that were
built there. Now closed of course.

apart from being "very" good looking coaches the Pullmans partly
took my eye because they were built just down the road from
where i live (5-10 minutes away) which made them an extra bit
special for me
i may have been mistaken in my recollection of the little
Terriers numbers and he may have said "about half a dozen",
older gentleman in the workshop was filling my head with so much
information and stories of one or the other of those two engines
being run at 70mph (or more) by one of the drivers he knew as a
younger railway employee
anyway regardless of that i had a wonderful day in the sun
listening to the stories and watching/listening to the engines
chuffing thier way around ;D

There is a lot of speculation as to why they were called
Terriers. Having been on the footplate it is obvious: they
actually make a yapping noise just like a little terrier as they
chuff!
