Canvas Top: questions and survey

Hi all, I now have finally sorted (almost) all the bits I would
need to change to soft top (eg. rear tailgate, chains,
droplocks, hoops, windscreen rail, used canvas). Some bits are
still missing (eg. double spring washers for tailgate, chain
sleeves), however, I could make a start now but got 'cold feet'
since I not only have to change the rear door to tailgate but
have to remove a humungous roof rack with spotlights as well -
and would have to shift it all probably by myself. Here are my
questions:
1. How many of you sport a canvas top?
2. What is your experience and how long do you usually leave it
on? All year round or just for the summer (this years summer
probably as a rare exception...)?
3. If I do the 'flatpack' technique (taking the roof apart),
will I be able to lift the safari roof off by myself (after a
good solid breakfast of coffee and hobnobs) (stupid question I
guess since the roof rack is probably much heavier...)
4. I don't have dry storage neither for the truck nor for the
roof bits - problem(s)?

You can leave your tilt on all winter, just make sure it's
waterproofed.
(Note to self: must waterproof tilt before winter...)
Split the hardtop before you remove it, and it's easier with two
people.
I'm only 10 minutes away, so don't hesitate to get in touch if
yo need a hand, - also if you need to have a look at my tilt &
sticks, just ask. :smilewide:

1. Me and many others,
2. All year round,
3. Depends on 88 or 109,
4. My stuff lives outside.
Go for it, keep the canvas looked after and you'll probably not
want to go back. You might miss the roofrack though!

Yep, mine has a soft top. It's on all the time and my truck has
spent every day outside since at least 1999 and it's still the
original canvas (was new at the time) it came with though it's
pretty much fucked now (guess it's to be expected though as it
lives under a tree and all sorts of shite and gunge ends up on
it), it might of survived a bit better if I'd cleaned and
waterproofed a bit more often... ::)

Had ragtop, went to truck cab so as to carry more shite and to
keep wife warm in winter, progressed to ifor williams as better
visibility than rag top and keeps the sheep from jumping out.

Another vote for all year round soft-topping.
I used to chop and change my 88, had soft top, hard top, SW top,
truck cab with tilt/ifor williams/nothing, but the soft top was
best.
Since I've had the S1 I haven't missed changing, in good weather
it's ace and warm enough in the winter. Lack of roof rack? Tilt
off, screen down and you can get all sorts stacked in >rock<
The only thing I don't like is the exhaust fumes being sucked in
if the rear curtain is rolled up but with windows open or door
tops off it ain't really an issue.

Tilt off all year round.
It's quieter than a hard top, and no condensation in winter.
Keeps dry if the canvas is proofed and everything tied on.
Not noticed it being colder.
Sides can be rolled up for winter fresh air motoring

After 3 winters with condensation dripping on me from my hardtop
and bloody noise as well I am getting tempted to ditch the roof
and go canvas.

Canvas all year round. Less noise than a rattling hard-top and
warmer provided you fit it right. A metal roof seem to radiate
cold.
