Had a day out today round Aberystwyth, started out at Borth and
then off to the Vale of Rheidol steam railway

After a brief chat we worked out that it would be really rushed
if we all went on the train and as the Devils Bridge end was
part way home we hatched a cunning plan... swmbo and the boy
would travel by train while I would take the car up to Devils
Bridge having waved them off

independently we all wondered who would win in a Top Gear Style
race kind of way :smilewide:
Admittedly on a slightly cheaper scale what with me being in
the diesel 306 daily but then we don't have their resources
either....
A nice cross country trip, including a section of gated road on
deserted roads
I won in the car (although I can't help feeling I got the worst
journey so got to greet them before a wander round the Devils
punchbowl

and then my prize - The railway are raising funds for the
rebuild of their next engine..

and offering the chance to drive an engine for a fiver - well it
woud have been rude not to so I got to drive this

ok it was only a very short run but given I have never driven an
engine, although I have had a hankering to since riding on the
Bluebell Line back when I was a kid it was bloody fantastic and
I loved it >rock< :giddy: couldn't stop grinning for ages
afterwards :smilewide: :giddy:

The picture of the "over and under" bridge caught my eye.
There's one near me, and I've always wondered if it was built
like that, or if the upper bridge was an "add on".
Since it's a railway bridge, it's almost certainly the way it
was built, but why? Is it stronger than a single "higher" span?
Or easier to build?
Anyone got any thoughts / information?

in the case of this one - the bridges were built at different
times as the older bridge became too weak/unstable. I guess
raising the carriageway and levelling out the road helped with
higher traffic levels too
