Tap and Die Set Question.

If I was in the position to buy a tap and die set for use on the
landrovers ,bearing in mind that one is 1957 and the other 1965,
what should I be looking for? Is it just a case of getting an
Imperial set or are they BSF, Whitworth specific ?

I think you will find BSF and UNF + possibly UNC I find all
these on my 1982 series 3 + some metric threads.
Be careful when buying taps and dies as most of the cheaper
stuff is carbon steel and not high speed steel. The carbon steel
stuff will only really clean up an existing thread, the high
speed steel (HSS) will cut a new thread.
Where are you? I am in south Staffs and have a good selection of
taps and dies here.

I'm in south Somerset. I've promised myself I'd get is a tap and
die set just for those five minute jobs that take half a day to
do due to having to find new bolts, nuts and such.
Plus I really really REALLY want a new toy ;D

I personally would be tempted just to go to an engineers
merchants and buy a selection of the appropriate taps and dies,
a tap wrench and a die holder.
You'll get loads that you'll never use in a "set"
I'd just get second taps as you will probably never need a first
(even tapping a new thread) the seconds are tapered enough and
the chances of you wanting to tap a blind hole are pretty slim
so you'll not need plug taps.
Also watch ebay, there were some sets of dies went last week for
around £20, I bet there was easily £50s worth.

a blind tap is useful for when the extractor tapping on a brake
drum goes pop.
