Fitting a servo to S3
DIR By: Ed_gasket

I have fitted a 2.5 NAS engine into my 1972 S3. The servo has a
master cylinder boloted to it which I assume is for dual circuit
brakes. As I only have one pipe coming off the existing master
cylinder can I simply use the dual mster and blank off one of
the outlets? Wjat would be involved in changing to dual circuit?
(which I guess is safer)
Comments, suggestions and sarcasm gratefully received. Cheers
Mike :smiley-furious:

I don't think you can blank one off. No reason I know of that
you can't tweak the pipes a little by the brass junction, run
the front brakes to one outlet and the rears to the other.
Someone on here is bound to know more than me on this...

What I mean is run pipe 32 direct to one outlet on the master
cylinder and leave the rest going to the other, blanking off one
outlet on the brass junction piece.

Tee piece for the front axle fed from the rear hole (closest to
the bulkhead) of the master cylinder
one new solid line to the rear axle flexi fed from the front
hole of the master cylinder
do NOT mix them up
easy peasy and ignore the PDWA (shuttle valve) as it's only
another possible headache that you don't want
bleed it up and away you go

Thanks for taking the time to reply chaps. Since posting I have
since got hold of a master cylinder for a single circuit braking
system which will bolt straight onto the servo thru the dreaded
eBay. Will see how we get on next weekend! Cheers for now. Mike

I don't know when that type of servo became optional for a
Series 3, but it may well be worth checking your pedal box
aperture is big enough (seeing as yours may be a fairly early
one at 1972). The hole in the bulkhead is actually about 1.5"
bigger to account for the different brake pedal. We found this
out the hard way on an early SIII SWB.
It's easy to check: Look from inside the footwell, if the clutch
and brake pedal apertures are the same size then you need to
enlarge the brake one 1.5" towards the top (dash panel) side of
the footwell. If it is already suitable then the difference will
be obvious.
Also your brake light switch gets mounted in the top of the
pedal housing.

When i uprated my 61 to servo (and 11" fronts), I had to cut out
the footwell as Doug has said, i then bought/found a single line
master with its own res and bolted that to the servo and that in
turn to the new/found pedal box/tower, there was no altering of
brakepipes or brake light switches
A hose to the exhaust fanny and away.
Still doesnt stop but it easier to press the pedal ;D

You are right. The non servo pedal assembly is diffrent from the
sevo set up. I managed to get one off ebay with the servo
attached (and dual mster cyl) I have seen some pix of the wing
modification to the non servo S3s on here so hopefully I can
make a decent job of it! Thanks again. M

......I have seen this mod on a series three when I bought a
Rangey diff from some dodgy bloke in Wiltshire a bout three
weeks ago! The Rangey diff works really well BTW!
