Do I just replace the starter solenoid?

Morning all,
My 1980 SIII 2.25 petrol has been standing in garage unused for
a month. No problems when last used. Now, go to start
it....nothing.
Checked the battery was charged.
Tried turning key with headlights on full. No dimming of lights.
Checked connectors on starter motor. Found the earth nearly
hanging off. Took off, cleaned up, retightened.
Still nothing.
My solenoid doesn't have a push button, so tried shorting the
solenoid contacts with a screwdriver. Result: starter motor
whirred and the engine fired.
I've just about reached the limit of my electrickery knowledge
now. Do I just replace the solenoid and hope it cures it, or is
there any other test I can do to find out which bit is faulty,
ie. the solenoid or the key switch.

If you're shorting the solenoid with a screwdriver and it's
working then that suggests to me that the solenoid is goosed.
Assuming that all connections are correct.

Check all connections Try taking a jump lead from battery
positive to starter and try it If that works looks like its your
solenoid

You should see a little wire goes to the spade connector on the
solenoid, you could try running a wire direct from that to the
+ve on the battery and see if it kicks in. Assuming the earth is
OK if it kicks in the fault is not the solenoid, could be the
ignition switch.

After checking the above (to prove you actually have a + from
the ignition trying to operate the solenoid) you could try
twatting it with a hammer to free off the stuck solenoid, you've
nowt to loose really if it isn't working.

Thanks, guys. Spot-on advice.
Tested with a wire from the spade to the positive battery pole.
Nothing. Twatted the solenoid a couple of times. Reapplied wire
to battery, starter turned and engine fired. Checked a few
times on the key starter and all is good :)
One more question:
Presumably the solenoid earths through its mounting plate, does
it? Like much else I'm finding on my vehicle, the nuts seem to
have been tightened with a Meccano spanner, possibly using a bar
of chocolate as a lever for extra torque. It's so loose I
wouldn't be surprised if there's a layer of dirt insulation
between the solenoid and the body. Ran out of time today but
I'll take off, clean up and tighten tomorrow. Wonder whether
that was also part of the problem.
