chav pump leak

Hi all,
Fired bubba up for the first time today, chuffed to bits as its
been a long time coming! I have a massive 90 amp battery
scrounged from the mechanic that fixes our ambo's and it span it
over a treat. Didn't even need a glow, which is good coz theyre
not wired in yet. However he's got a huge fuel leak. On the
bottom of the pump/distributor thingy there is a round disc
shaped thing that spins around. It would seem that the the leak
is coming from just above there. My question is, what is the
disc thingy, what's above it and where could the leak be coming
from?

Ah that'll have to wait then as im on lates tonight and tomorrow
and not home in between. If it helps its about an inch and a
half in diameter and is underneath the body of the pump. I can
turn it by hand but it doesn't seem to be on a thread.

The leaks on these (I trust you mean a 2286) are normally the
spindle seals on the outer covers. The "Disc thingy" needs a
better description.

Ah sorry no its 2.5td. On the picture its the damper at the
bottom.
Also on the picture there is a return pipe to the tank from the
fuel filter, If I haven't got one what will happen if anything?

So after some investigations it is the actual damper that seems
to be leaking. I took it out and there are two 'o' rings on the
shaft that screws into the body which I have replaced but its
still leaking. I believe that there is some sort of diaphragm
inside but its sealed. Does any one have a car pump kicking
around unloved that I could snaffle the diaphragm off please. I
have also read that its possible to swap the cav pump for a
Bosch pump for a TDI. Has anyone heard of this? Is it possible?

Not a lot unless you run it out of diesel, and which point it
will take forever to get all the air back out (or if it ever
starts drawing air in, it will keep collecting in the system
till it conks out).

I'm on the holy grail looking at the idea of fitting a TDI pump
on a 2.5 NAD engine (same pump as yours).
A guy on the S2 site says his friend had done it with no
problems, but nothing more detailed than that. Supposably he
kept the original injectors and the lot.
If I find anything I'll let you know, likewise please.

Hi Mark,
I was searching Google for info about the cav pump and I think
that was where I read about the possible swap. I'm not a member
of that forum, it just came up in the search so I didn't explore
it further. I need to source a new damper for my pump because
I'm not as clever as I thought and it now won't run at all.
Don't ask! :banghead I've not much time on my hands at the
moment but next time I'm at the scrappy I'm going to see about
getting a 200tdi pump, providing they don't want too much for
it.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Good luck with getting the TDI pump for not a lot, unfortunately
they seem to catch a few quid on Ebay.
If you do manage to get one, let me know how you get on. I have
got the engine sat on floor, which the TDI pump could be tried
on if you are somewhere localish.
