Starting resistance.

Recently put a new dizzy and overhauled carb on 'Tommy'...he's
gin. timed and fuelling well. Except, first thing this morning
(and it happened once or twice before the changes) there has
been a labouring to start...like a dying battery effect. Out for
a run some 10 kms up the road, with a couple of reasons to stop
and start, and it became worse - to the point where there was
simply a click at one attempt at ignition, after which a fiddle
with the solenoid (twatting with a hammer) had it return to the
laboured start, but start it did.
Now, the battery, which has been a faithful block for some six
years now, rests at 12.57v and charges at over 14v. However,
I've noticed a bit of chalk residue around the battery clamp.
That latter evident breach of acid and obvious need for a new
battery aside, I'd have still thought there was sufficient power
to do kick things into action and I've convinced myself there is
something wrong between battery and starter... like solenoid and
or earths.
Thoughts from anybody would be welcome. Combination of all
factors or can somebody put it down to one issue from my
diagnosis?

Try to use a booster the next time in the morning.
If that gives a good start you probably looking at a new
battery...

I know you state that its timed correctly, but have you tried
retarding the ignition timing a tadge?

But would that result in just an electrical click at the
solenoid, Jim?
I'm not doubting your experience, but I'd have thought too much
advance would have it turning with strong irregularity and
possibly backfiring.

If you've not got a drop tester at your disposal see if you can
take a reading off the battery whilst a willing assistant flicks
the starter, if the voltage drops to cock all then the wiggly's
are getting out of the battery, down the wires and to their
point of use, if however the voltage hovers only marginally
below 12 then your wigglys aren't getting out and doing their
thang.

I used to get similar with my V8 series2, ended up being dirty
contacts in the solenoid, stripped and cleaned worked fine.
'till I filled it with muddy water and had to clean again!

Well, having done Joskin's test and seen the voltage drop by
only 0.19 with still only a click, then having spoken to the man
himself, a new battery is to be fitted, plus a verification of
everything along the circuit of solenoid and connections,
starter, and earths.
An evident leak from the battery doesn't inspire confidence in
the first place; so if we have a new one in there, it at least
eradicates one issue and may solve the whole problem.

Ah, no, I was considering that an advanced spark would generate
combustion PRIOR to TDC, which makes it harder for a weak
battery to turn the engine over. It would allow you to get it
going, simply by moving the spark to TDC.

If you battery doesn't fix it, I'm with Jim ^^
Mostly as I've had the same problem when getting the timing a
little to advanced , starter just clicks as it engages then
can't turn the engine over

I too have had an iffy solenoid that would click but merely
great one whopping high resistance joint useful for nothing
except rapidly heating the inside wing.
Other times it would work a treat just to be odd.
