I believe the DVLA's flawed thinking is if something's taxed it
will be driven and therefore must be insured Jon. In practice
people with historic motors may well have them on LUF&T part of
the year and road risk the other part, they really should have
twigged this and made the bollocks not apply to the HISTORIC
taxation class.

A few extra lines of code cost tho....
Its simple logic from their POV. If its not sorn then its on the
road therefore must be Taxed & Insured. The computer has no way
of knowing that its actually in bits under a tarp and heaven
forfend that the Polis actually check, so its easier all round (
FOR THEM) just to fire out the fines and wait for the dosh to
roll into the skint Treasury.
OT but I actually managed to get a fine ( late submission of tax
return) cancelled. I argued that it went in on time it was just
not correct, most of the subsequent "lateness" was how long they
took to spot the error and return it. At one point they were
looking to skin the missus and me for £1100. Phew.

The flaw is there is no requirement to send the tax disc back
when you SORN, and no obvious way to un-SORN unless you phone
them. Take my Discgay. I bought it with 4 months tax but insured
it with Tempcover.com for a day. I then SORNed it, kept the tax
disc, got the lads at work to weld it up over about a month and
when it passed the MOT then insured it proper. When it came to
renewal time their computer got all confused. Now I had done
nothing wrong, their systems just can't cope with it.
The same thing applies to my old boss when he does weddings in
his Routemaster. It's insured for road risk only for the days he
uses it, then he SORNs it. The trouble is the DVLA can't cope
with it at all, if he uses it twice in a month he's not going to
tax, refund, tax, refund and pay twice for the same month.
Likewise the DVLA say you can't do this without a 21 day gap.
Why? Anyone is quite entitled to get single day insurance each
time they use a vehicle, not our fault the DVLA are too stupid
to have taken this requirement into account. :wanker:
