i had a similar sort of problem a couple of years ago and it
turned out to be the mainshaft nut in the back (behind the cover
       plate) had come loose
Lucy pointed me to the solution when mine developed it, i
thought it was going to be a gearbox strip

Does the gearstick feel like it's moving (or trying to move)
where it should? or has it gone all floppy?
I had that, where the end of the gearstick had jumped out of
where it should be and was floating in free air with it stuck in
reverse. Easilly fixed with access through the 4WD lever hole.

thanks for the advice I came home early enough today so thought
id get the floor up and have a look......SORTED
One of the springs that hold the reverse gate had snapped at the
top and dropped down onto the gearbox and was lying horizontal,
when i went to pull it out of reverse it moved up the box and
jammed against the casing stopping me lining up reverse to get
it out of gear and fully into the neutral position, which is why
i had trouble getting it out of reverse.
as they were not alligned neither of the other two parts of the
gear selector would move, as it was technically not in reverse
       or neutral............
thanks for the advice thankfully it was a very simple and quick
       fix.......
