       The Humph
By: Joskin Date: July 27, 2013, 5:38 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I thought it was about time I dedicated a bit of time to poor
old Humph, he's been languishing in the front garden for the
best part of 2 yrs now and it has done him no good whatsoever.
For the benifit of those who've arrived since Humph and I last
graced these boards, he's a series 3 lwb station wagon in marine
blue, 2.5 n/a with an R380 onto series transfer conversion. He
was my daily driver up untill spring 2010, since then (apart
from taking on the role of lead wedding car for my wife and I in
the winter of 2010) he has been mostly sitting awaiting a
chassis swap to the galvy item propped up the end of the big
       shed.
Enthusiasm got the better of me last back end and I moved him up
onto the drive to try and see if I could get him back on the
road for this summer (wanting to get over to Jan's do in Czech
for one). I fitted a pair of rear paras that Landyboy had passed
my way, the origionals were still holding up pretty well but had
been splaying apart for the previous 2 years and I wanted to
match up the arse end to the already para'd fronts. The exhaust
was the next port of call, he ran well enough on the old 2 1/4
system but I know from experience that a 2.5 n/a breaths a whole
lot better through a larger bore pipe plus the old one was
plenty rotten and had already been patched in a place or two. In
the tradition of making the most amount of work out of a job I
trundled over to Rimmers and picked up the very cheapest of 110
debender systems, going on the theory that its got the right
amount of pipework to go front to back and appropriate
baffling/silencing too.... thus far the plan held water, but
once it came to actually attaching it to the motor and following
some sort of acceptable route front to back the aforementioned
water pissed out all over the drive ! after (I don't remember
how long) of cutting splicing welding grinding fitting cutting
splicing welding grinding painting I managed to get it fitting
to a point I could live with, and thats more or less how Humph
stayed untill the begining of last week.
So here we are with the sun shining, a couple of weeks hols,
and a date at t'pit fast approaching !
I used to revel in impossible deadlines and tasks, working
throught the night on many occasions to get a job done which
should have taken weeks not days...... those days are gone and
not to return, I know that now, I still don't like it and
perhaps I never will but the tedium of setting overly easy goals
and timescales to tasks is the way for me to actually get stuff
       done in the future.
This week has therefore consisted of,
Monday = drank tea and looked out of the room window thinking to
myself "I'll charge Humphs battery up tommorow and get him
going. Take comfy ride in vehicle of mass disinction over to
Lozzaboys pad and drink tea with him, Kev, Munkquard, and the
       laydeeeeez.
Tuesday = drank tea and put Humphs battery on charge, also
dispatched a quantity of spiders who had taken up residence in
the cab. Then watched vidoes and listened to music.
Wednesday = drank tea and checked the progress of the battery,
plenty amps heading from the charger to the battery but none of
them staying put within so ordered up a new one. Made more tea,
and set about flushing the coolant system. Job jobbed I rifled
through tub after tub to find a new dowty washer to replace the
shagged rubber washer on the rad drain plug.
Thursday = Physio day, generally a good day so setting out my
stall as such I drink coffee and finish off freeing up the
steering relay, grease up all the track rod ends, top up the
       steering box fluid.
Friday = Take family to Legoland for the day, drink not nearly
enough tea and dispair at the horrible parents and thier feral
offspring. Park and contents however very good.....
Saturday = Drink tea in bed maintaining a healthy disregard for
anything of the AM, grumble that the new battery hasn't arrived,
but find contentment that a new pair of bib and brace overalls
has!!! Eventually get outside, fit battery from vehicle of mass
distinction, check oil and water, check all electrics and find
that everything barring the hooter and the screenwash is working
perfectly  on second go Humph fires up and I grin alot.
I left him running for about half an hour whilst I checked
everything over in the engine bay, no leaks, all fine apart from
the rubber mounts which hold the air filter are pretty perished
so I'll replace those in the morning. To finish off I put the
battery back on to the VOMD and just about get tools away when
       the heavens open.
So thats me as is now, hoping to back rolling in Humph in time
       for LATP.........
       We'll see ;-)

       Humph returns........ lets Rock!!! >rock<
not too much tho else Toby wont be able to keep it straight ;-)
       Progress as thus far,
Sunday - Since he has been stood Humph has lost a little over
half a pot of brake fluid, and after a quick look underneath it
all appears to be a bit moist around the bottom of the front
near side wheel. A bit strange really, as a gaggle of friends
had replaced all the front end brakes, just a couple of years
ago, with some old stock girling parts I'd wombled away in the
shed. So, wheel off, slack adjusters backed off, all 3 of the
phillips screws popped out with ease thanks to copper grease
a-plenty!!! yep this is the side that LightwieghtNat did ;-)
Drum off and all is well inside, turns out the dampness on the
wheel was in fact gear oil coming through from the back of the
backplate. With that sorted I set about the shoes with some 80
grit, they'd glazed a bit, then onto the drum for more of the
same and finish off by dressing up the lip on the outer edge of
the drum. Back together and adjusted up they are grabbing a
       little but they'll bed in.
Looking around under the wheelarch its all a bit shabby so I
decided to tart it up a bit, I used an old screwdriver first to
scrape off the worst of the flaking paint and rust then followed
it up with a wire brush and more 80 grit. When I last did a
number on the chassis I red oxided it and then chassis blacked
it over the top but I intend replacing it with the new galv one
next year so opted for a quick dab over with some one coat cover
       anything stuff.
Pleased with that little lot, I cleaned up all the brake pipes
and greased them too, then finished off by going over the whole
of the front n/s corner with some GT85 and an oily rag. (and
also most off the engine bay, I got a bit carried away :smile1)
For the first time in a long time Humph is looking quite
presentable (on one corner anyway) I did take a couple of pics
but they're on my phone and I can't remember how to get them
onto here so they'll have to wait a bit ;-)
More tomorrow, I'm hoping the new battery will arrive so that
can be fitted, should be straight in but you never know, and the
search continues for where the brake fluid has been making good
       its escape!
       cheers,
       Joskin.
