Just about to do same, picked up a leisure battery on the
weekend, simple relay kit off EBay, a fuse box etc... Going
under passenger seat with fuse box and cig lighter in back for
fridge etc... Will be wiring whilst camping this weekend as time
is tight...

What I have used and recommend is the "Self Switching Dual Split
Charge Relay" from Towsure. It's £9.95 +p&p available at
www.towsure.co.uk
HTML http://www.towsure.co.uk
.
It monitors the voltage output from the alternator and only
switches when the voltage is high enough, ie. when the engine is
running. When the engine stops and the voltage decays, the unit
will switch off, thus saving the battery from being discharged
by the auxiliary load.
It's easy to wire, just a fused supply from a suitable point,
using 4/6 mm csa cable and an earth, then the wiring to whatever
you wish supplying!
The unit is smaller than a fag packet and will fit behind the
light cover at the back!

If you use a heavy leisure battery (120A) then THIS ONE
HTML http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230955442898?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649<br
/>would do the job.
I used the Towsure/ebay 30A type like Mr P & Dan on Patrick's
Carawagon, but it struggles to charge his Optima yellow top
unless he's on a long run.
I pulled an auto sensing split charge unit from a Disco (rated
at 70A similar to the ebay one) which I've got on my Carawagon
charging another Optima yellowtop and that seems to keep it
topped up nicely even on short runs.
Cheers,
Robin.

I just use a standard 100a relay switched off the charge light
circuit iirc, so it only switches on when the alternator starts
throwing out charge.

Depends on the load on the second battery. X-Eng do a good one
suitable for winching. You shouldn't have a problem with one of
those :smile1

Autosparks do a decent kit; as the rest of their stuff is good I
imagine that will be too
