Quick mot question

I'm ordering stuff and need to know whether to put new front
shock absorbers on the shopping list. I know they look shit but
will the mot man fail me for this rusty shocker?

Money is tight this month so I only want to do the absolute
essentials.

I think you're OK if it's not leaking. But if I was you, I'd
wrap a bit of plastic (squeezy bottle kinda stuff) round it,
then several turns of duct tape or some cable ties. It won't
fool anyone, but it'll look less obviously cruddy.

I'd be sip prised if that passes an mot, the shaft looks
corroded, and could the corroded case be considered a problem

That wants replacing or at least disguising - in my experience
with MOT tests, both non-VOSA staff with Land Rovers and VOSA
staff with buses general presentation (bullshit as our engineers
call it) is important. If I were a tester and saw that I'd look
doubly hard at the vehicle as I'd assume a heck of a lot more
was fucked if someone presented summat like that shock for test.
Dust covers are not required, Procomp shocks dont have them
after all. If you really can't stretch to replacing it I'd pull
the shock off and neatly trim the dust cover off at the top with
a grinder and give it a blow over to make it look like it was
supposed to be that way.
Judging by the testers manual it depends on how you interpret
corrosion, it shouldn't fail as the dust cover does not impede
its operation. Polishing the rust off the rod with a Scotchbrite
pad wouldn't hurt either.

An old mountain bike inner tube and some cable ties, or jubilee
clips might work, or a couple of old prop shaft rubber boot
thingys if you have any old props laying around?
