Battery for 2.25L petrol

SIII SWB 2.25L, Im running a pair of run of the mill driving
lights and a CB radio , im seeking advice on what size battery
to go for? how many CCA do I need or is recommended? Will get
a winch later....much later.

My rule of thumb has always been to fit as many amps into the
battery tray as you can...especially if you have a mind to run
ancillaries like winches and shit.
The other option would be to set up a split charge system and
secure another battery in the back, running all the extra fruit
from that.

The radio will be drawing 2/10s of sod all. The driving lights (
Why ? Do you have aspirations to rally the thing ? ) a fair bit
more. I 've got "72"s in both mine, quite happy with an
occasional bit of winchitude and that. 550 amps.

Righto thanks for that Drew and genem. ive got the 55w halogen
bulb headlights and the driving lights allow a wider and clearer
field of vision which can only be a good thing right! And I got
em free. That's why I put them on. 550CCA isn't a big battery.
I was thinking a N70Z which is about 720CCA but not sure of the
dimensions whether it will fit? Might be an overkill although
they market that size as an entry level 4wd battery here. The
battery in there now is bubbling and frothing up. I thinks shes
gonna blow.
Id like to do the dual battery setup but it costs a fair bit to
go down that path. Do I need it....nah. I need tyres too. And a
heater that works. and a cig lighter socket, I only fart once
and its warmer than that heater.

I've always had the same philosophy as Drew, use the largest
battery that will fit. With any old vehicle it can be having a
decent amount of power in the battery that gets you out of the
shit. Both my 109 hardtop and 88 are running the same Exide
batteries, cheap off eBay and ridiculously overpowered for a
series.

Makes sense NoelC, I think the N70z will fit, just, which has
around 720 - 750CCA depending on the brand you buy. $200 AUD for
a well known brand type. Exide and Century are in that category.

it's nice to have a high cca battery but that will amount to
nothing if your lights/winch etc' draw off it much faster than
your charging system can put it back, i'm not suggesting the
need for monster output alternators but it's always worth
checking the output of the one you have fitted and if low (early
ones were only about 30a) i'd suggest finding one from a more
modern motor and fitting that (200tdi disco ones only need
"clocking") as they're more likely to be double or more the amps
due to all the electrical bollocks fitted
i understand the costs problem with split charge systems,
depending on your motor/facilities/fabrication skills you
"could" fit a second alternator and battery just for the winch
and camping/worklights rather than risk the primary battery
getting "flattened" trying to winch out your dead/stuck motor,
alternators can obviously be got from any car breakers it'll
just be a case of deciding if it's suitable for your purpose and
if the correct style pulley can be fitted

It sounds like your alternator is overcharging if your current
battery is bubbling. Check the voltage when running, it should
be between 13.2 and 14.4, anything above/below, then replace the
alternator.
