Bogfogs motor, Gordon the 1959 88" bitsa

ok a new project i've taken on, it's been modified in the past
with a 3.9 rover and then swapped out for a 3.5, it's now
getting pulled apart again for repairs, cleaning up and a 200tdi
(yes, no more V8 goodness :'( )

it needs the swivels sorting so i figure i'll strip the axle in
situ to make it easier to store/clean/paint

mucky worn bits (and those springs were a bastard to remove)

that's looking better, also mopped and painted the spring plates
and draglinks

that's more or less as far as i've got at present ..
jobs i know i've got to do before getting to lifting the tub off
(i'm working front to back the same as i did with Big Ears) is
replace chassis bushes :'( a small weld on the offside dumbiron
where the replacement DI wasn't fully welded on and then strip
and rebuild the bulkhead
unfortunately the person(s) who originally fitted the V8 thought
it a wonderful idea to chop the whole centre out of the bulkhead
and bodge in a new crudely homemade centre ::) so that will be
replaced with my old one from my scrap BH along with a new pair
of footwells from Les Cromie
progress will be slow and painful as per usual :D

I remember that truck!! It had a 3.5 EFI in it and was in LRO
years and years and years ago.

that's the one, i've seen a scan or pages of the original
publication that Bogfog has in his history folder but i thought
it was 3.9efi (i might be wrong, i often am)
anyway we have a little more progress, i've been playing with
wire wheels, paint and spanners along with collecting a couple
of bits
i've removed and stripped both pedal boxes ready to clean and
paint, removed the steering box (snapped a bolt in the casting
but managed to get it out with heat and brute force ;D ) ,
stripped one swivel, cleaned and primed and painted all the
other bits in thier first coat of black, stuff is now looking
nice ;D
shiney bits (track rods, backplates and springplates are also
coated)

a little update as i've been distracted with other work
i've finally got the bulkhead off yesterday, the bugger fought
me every inch of the way with rusted bolts, along with many
different sizes (metric and imperial :banghead ) holding the
sills and rails on (not to mention being way longer than needed)

today i've had the pleasure of cutting the front spring shackles
off and burning the remains of the bushes out (still got to cut
the outers), removed both exhaust downpipes and the front brake
pipes and the 5 way union
this has allowed me to get my favourite tool out again to start
wire mopping the front half of the chassis and grind off the
remains of the battery carrier legs and then go round removing a
little factory weld spatter, i'm quite pleased as it's now
really looking like i've go something cleaned and almost ready
for paint, only almost as i'll no doubt have missed bits and
fiddley corners, i've got to get a couple more wire mops now as
i've just about killed my last decent one and the ones i bought
from autojumbles are badly out of balance so hardly worth using
(they may be what killed my last two angle grinders thinking of
that)
anyway hopefully tomorrow i'll get a couple of useful bits from
the carboot assuming i wake up early enough and remember to go,
if not i'll be out there poking around and cleaning more bits
more pictures of cleaned stuff tomorrow with luck :smile1

Looking good i am set wit the same problem wheter to change from
2.5 petrol to either 200tdi or go to V8 as i have a gas kit ?

i think that if i had a gas kit laying about i'd have to fit a
V8 to see if i liked it/test the economy, set up correctly it'd
run on nothing but gas
it's easy enough to swap to tdi if the costs were still too much

which ever way i go i got to get the engine but not sure which
way to go as i do not do a lot of miles so still not sure the V8
sounds nice but running a 200tdi in the range rover at the
moment with a bit of tweaking they are just as good as the V8
except the noise
