What to do about handbrake expander rod.

Hello,
While getting ready to fit a series 3 box to my 109 I have
managed to snap the threaded rod going into the transmission
assembly. Will get it apart tomorrow but wondered whether the
rod is easy to replace or is it just better to replace the whole
expander unit?
Any advice on getting the gearbox lined up and attached to the
engine as it looks a ball-ache and my test trial run went badly.
There is no cab/bulkhead fitted at the moment and I have an
engine crane but getting all those holes lined up seems a trial.

i have found if you get a jack under the back of the box it help
to line everything up, if you can get a couple of nuts on it
helps a lot but make sure the splines are lined up as if not it
just wont go into place, sometimes the whole thing just lines up
and goes together well and others it takes a lot of fannying
around and its much easier with a few mates round to help jiggle
it into place.

much as per HippyDaves reply, sometimes it can seem like you're
fitting a completely wrong gearbox and can be a right pig, other
times they almost "fall in"
i have found that it can be easier for wriggling the gearbox to
line things up is to take your time setting up the hoist rope to
cradle the gearbox nice and close and then come straight up from
the centre of the cradle (balance point) to the hoist (as if
you're hanging it from a single rope centrally)
this way the gearbox can be wriggled in all directions with
minimum difficulty
also being as you've got no bulkhead in the way i'm going to
guess you've changed the clutch and maybe the spigot bush, a
new bush has minimal play/slop on the spigot (and no wear on the
near edge) and the spigot has no "lead in" taper this means you
really do need to align the clutch really carefully to assist
you sliding the gearbox home
if you need to jack the gearbox in then i'd suggest that the
clutch isn't perfectly aligned and needs rechecking or you've
been really unfortunate and bought a spigot bush that needs
reaming out a couple of thou once fitted
i had to lift my gearbox out a couple of weeks ago and replace
the friction plate, careful realignment meant that the gearbox
slipped home really easily using the above described sling

Having changed gearboxes and engines in CliVE 3 or 4 times now
the easiest way i have found is to do it gearbox first. So
having the gearbox mounted up and then jacked up to the correct
angle to align with the engine as it comes in. What you can then
do if two of you is one of you sit on tthe bumper with your back
against something solid like another car or a wall and with your
boot pushing on the crank pulley and the other shifting the
gearbox up and down on the jack and rocking the engine side to
side.

Thanks for the advice - I hope to have extra hands available
next time I try.
Any advice on whether I can just replace the expander rod or
will I need to replace the whole module?

Another trick if the clutch isn't quite aligned is if it starts
to go onto the splines but is tight, then release the clutch
(can be done with a bar on a IIa if the hydraulics aren't
connected) and it will centralise and the box should slide on
nicely. Sometimes they can be a bitch sometimes they can slide
together nicely, just take your time and don't force anything!
You can replace the expander rod providing you can buy it
seperately, or get a second hand spare. The unit dismantles very
easily, and in fact once the shoes are removed the innards of
the expander will practically just drop out.

In the end fitted a new unit and it went far too smoothly!!
