elektrickery wiring question.

Hi all. Trying to get my head around the wiring on my s3 petrol.
Have put the diesel 2.5 in which uses a starter with the
solenoid on top. My question is the old wiring went to the
starter solenoid however I obviously don't need it for the
starter now so how do I get the power into the truck? Do I
retain the old solenoid for all the other stuff and wire the new
starter separately? I'm usually ok with wiring but can't seem to
get my head around this one! Any advice greatly received!

Hi fella I would leave the old solenoid in and rum a new feed
down to the starter motor and put your start switch in to the
earth of the starter solenoid :thumbs:

You could leave the solenoid in place and just use it as a
connector.
The live runs to it from the batttery you then run a direct live
from the same contact to the larger contact on the starter.
You then need a smaller cable from the ignition switch to the
smaller connector (for the solenoid) on the starter.

Thanks chaps, that makes sense.
Here's another one for ya. Obviously im going to need some sort
of glow plug activation. My thoughts being if I were to connect
the wire from the ignition that used to activate the starter To
the glow plug solenoid, then have a push button start for the
starter, I could keep glowing until it starts and it give a bit
of added security in the process?

I would not go that way personally because on cold mornings you
might want to give it 5 seconds before you try to turn it over .
I would put the glow plug relay on the button (alot of the time
you will not need it ) and keep the starter as is.

I would fit a push button timer switch (straight off the shelf
from maplins/rs) and use that for the glow plugs.
Neatest solution would maybe be a new ignition switch with a
reverse glow plug position, wired to a remote operated timing
relay. Click back once if glow plugs are required then start
normally :) I [i]think[/I] the ones vehicle wiring products sell
would fit in nicely. :-?

Battery to starter, starter to alternator, alternator to
ignition switch.

I would just get an old glow plug relay from the breakers wired
to the ignition, built in timer, big enough to do the job,
simples.
Although that means you will use the glow plugs every time even
if you don't need em, depends if you want to be able to select
when you use them?
You will need BIG relays though for any swithching last relay i
fixed had 2 x 40 amp relays in it :eek: .

That's how I hooked up the 2.5 petrol starter in the 88, same
setup needing a permanent battery connection.

Thanks for all the help lads and lasses, got it it spinning over
now! :thumbs: Stop solenoid now. Where should I wire it? Should
it go to an ignition live, i.e. one that is live when the
ignition is on?
