Recently ive noticed that on some local hills that i used to fly
up, I'm now sauntering up or even changing down to get up at any
pace
The go is going, any ideas?
I'm towing the maggot up Norf soon and don't want to take 3 days
to get there.

When did you last change your air filter? Could be as simple as
a blocked filter :rolleye0012:

On the swirl type of pump they loose power due to dirty fuel
filter had that on the yellow bus. You can always drop out the
air filter and see if that cures the problem first hope that
helps

i lost power in my bitsa a couple of years ago, folks may
remember my bonnet being up at LaTP a couple of years ago with
myself and JE being up to our necks trying to get inside my
injector pump
the problem (after i'd fitted new filters to try and cure it)
turned out to be the fuel metering bits that come into action as
the turbo pressurises them
possibly because i'd sank it a year or so before i'd had a
certain amount of water go through and the lower pin/meter had
siezed in it's bore
top off, diaphram and pin out (bastard to remove due to the
stuck lower pin) then i think we had to dismount the
accellerator cable linkage and big curly spring as there's a
plug that needed undoing (like a wading plug) behind it
this then allowed me to get a small drift in to tap the back of
the pin/meter
between tapping and a screwdriver down from the top we managed
to free it back off (lots of wd40 as well i think) and i was
back to full power
actually whilst we were at it we gave it a little basic tweak by
rotating the diaphram pin 90 degrees to allow a little more fuel
when on boost, we also left out the white spacer (looks like a
bit of plastic plumbing pipe) that sits on top of the diaphragm
if you find yourself taking this apart be careful to note
(indelible marker is useful) the position of the pin/diaphram
before removing anything other than the cover as that pin has an
upside down cone machined into it (off centre) which is the
section that controls your on-boost fuel metering, you really
don't want to be guessing which position you need it in when
reassembling
as said earlier check/change both filters also check your in
tank pick up, i rip the filters off those when i tdi as they can
block up especially if they've been sat in really old fuel
and finally if no joy with those i have had a really odd
experience of the stop solenoid partially dying and not pulling
the plunger completely open (this was in a BX with the XUD
engine), easy way to test that (if you can get the bastard out)
is to just remove the plunger and little spring and screw the
top back into the injector pump and take it for a run, only
thing then is you need to stall the engine to switch it off
one other thing to check is the boost pipe is properly attached
to the turbo with no splits/blockages/compressed kinks
oops just remembered the most basic (and common) fault is
insufficient travel on the linkage on the top of the injector
pump, often caused by the accellerator pedal coming loose and
slipping around on the rod (happened to me twice now)
if it turns out to be anything else then you've found a new
failing to me

I also have had Nightmare's problem but more recently problems
caused by a split turbo hose. Diagnosed by Mr Eastwood and cured
for a fiver at the land rover emporium in Buxton.

Thanks guys, there is plenty there to look at, I have a fuel
filter so will swop that and the air first and see how we go
from there

sounds like the lift pump has gone to me. Can you feel any
pressure when you operate the manual priming lever?

Changed the fuel filter yesterday and took it for a 30 mile
jolly,(stopping off for half an hour for a pint) no different
still no power in top going up hills it used to fly up,I haven't
changed the air filter as i can't get at the bastard without
taking the wing off or modding it a little :banghead
Thing is it seems ok in the lower 3 gears
Got back home and sat idling for a minute and it died and would
not restart
so, loosened the bleed screw on top of the filter housing and
pumped the lift pump, fuck all happened and the pump handle
stayed floppy.
Fitted new lift pump and he started straight up and idled fine,
I'm hoping this has cured it but haven't been for a blat yet to
find out.
The old pump was goosed so hero points to Dave88sw
