blue/black smoke

Hi all
my 1975 series3, 2.25 N/A diesel has just passed its MOT. Only
2 advisories. 1- omits excessive blue smoke when idling. 2 -
omits excessive black smoke when idling. I agree it does omit
quite a bit of blue smoke when idling. It only omits black smoke
when I put the accelerator full down. either way I would like to
reduce the amount of smoke it does omit, as I do think it is
excessive. I am not daft all together, I know there is always
going to be smoke, but would like a little less. Question is
where do I start.
cheers
carl

many people will be along soon to say what is needed. Blue smoke
means it is burning it so your engine is wearing out and black
smoke means your timing could be out. Actions to right the
wrongs include making sure your timing is correct.

I'm no expert in Land Rover diesels but from my experience with
buses generally blue is oil and black is unburnt fuel, those
links from bubble are really good. Common issues for us on the
buses are worn bores and rings, I'm guessing a compression test
wouldn't be a bad place to start. Also if the engine is cold
it's far more likely to blue smoke in my experience. Does it
blue smoke on idle when fully warm (I mean oil up to temperature
not just water)?

working its way to fucked, that is not a bad thing, you have
time to plan for repairs.

Blue smoke is certainly oil. Black smoke is excess fuel caused
by too little air. Try running with your air filter hose removed
and see if it improves. It might be the hose collapsing
slightly...
