Trains and Lanes
By: Dave Date: July 7, 2013, 3:40 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Today I went to the NRM at York to see the 6 A4 class engines
gathered together as part of the celebration of 75 years of
Mallard holding the world speed record for a steam railway
engine. I also intended to take in a few lanes afterwards.
I decided to do it old school and so instead of a sat nav (which
I have to use every day for work) I decided to use memory and
these...

And, if memory failed, this olde worlde road atlas:

I also intended to avoid motorways and, dual carriageways as
much as possible and so I set off early to bag a shady spot in
York Station car park. I then took a stroll across to the
station where, needless to say, I didn't take any pics of the
trains as there's nothing worth photographing anymore - plastic
units and electric expresses have replaced the big English
Electric and Sulzer diesels of my youth. There was however an
interesting old tile map of the North Eastern Railway still on
the wall on platform 1. Here's just a part of it.

So over to the NRM for opening time and there's a massive queue
with more than its fair share of screaming brats but I braved
the screams of "where's Thomas?" and went straight to the Great
Hall, where the 6 were placed around the turntable. It was
impossible to get a decent photo of any of them but I did what I
could and have spliced 4 pics together to get them in.

A favourite of mine is Bauxite No.2, a small industrial shunting
engine, built by Black Hawthorn & Co. of Gateshead in 1877.

Evening Star, a BR class 9F heavy freight loco, was the last
steam engine to be built in British Railways' workshops. It was
built in Swindon in 1963.

The plaque affixed to Mallard.

And so, after a couple of hours, I returned to the motor in its
shady spot and made a brew. I sat for a while, drinking my cuppa
and eating sarnies that I had made last night. There was no way
I was being ripped off buying anything either in York or the
NRM!
Then it was turn left out of the car park, into Leeman Road and
toward the ring road and a B-road that headed, eventually, to
Kirbymoorside, where there is an unsurfaced road marked as a
dead end. But I know different and it's only a dead end to those
who cant, or won't drive through the ford. I didn't get any
pics, obviously, but I got a bow wave that lapped over the wing
tops. Then it was north to Gillamoor and onto Rudland Rigg...

Part way along the Rigg is Bloworth Crossing, the site of a
level crossing of the Rosedale ironstone railway
HTML http://image-archive.org.uk/wp-content/MAX/2011_04/168.jpg
. I
stopped here for another brew and just to hear nothing but the
breeze and a few sheep and bees.

Rudland Rigg is about 9 miles long and you could drive about 8
of those miles in an ordinary car but the last mile has some
rocky bits that you'd come unstuck on.

Then it was down to Battersby Junction, Castleton and then
another lane that took me down to Glaisdale and then a ford and
this pleasant leafy lane that took me to the road for Rosedale
Abbey.

Through Rosedale and up Chimney Bank, a twisty road with a
ruling gradient of 1 in 3 with this R.O.C. post at the top.
Despite going equipped with my torch of epicness and a T-bar I
couldn't get in as some miserable bastard had welded it up -
years ago by the look of it.

Then it was down to Hutton le Hole, the ford again and
kirkbymoorside then down past Castle Howard.

I was going to cheat and take the A64 but when I got to it there
was a queue stretching as far as I could see so I went across
and took the back roads but by now I couldn't be arsed taking
any more pics. I passed the end of the Darien Gap but decided
doing it alone was silly and didn't even try.

Good run out Dave. There is a fantastic chip shop in Nawton and
the old station building is still there. (Ref your pic of the
map you used) This is at the south end of Rudland Rigg. The Rigg
was shrouded in mist when I went over a few weeks ago.

Cheers, chaps. It was a nice day out in some fine weather.
Sometimes it's just good to get out in the Land Rover on your
own, without having to worry about anyone else and what they
want to do.

That's what I would call a great day out. Especially the cuppa
sheep and bees bit. Bliss.

[quote]Evening Star, a BR class 9F heavy freight loco, was the
last steam engine to be built in British Railways' workshops. It

It was actually built in 1960, and withdrawn in 1965 after an
accident. There were rumours that it was not actually the
genuine item, having had its identity swapped ala Albert Hall!.
I have had the pleasure of driving 92214 on a number of
occasions and despite the collossal size of the boiler, and
awesome power, it is acutally a lot easier to drive than a lot
of smaller locomotives. You just have to be careful buffering
up, especially tender first, as the steam brake takes a while to
take effect! It is sad that these fine engines were introduced
so late and scrapped so early.
For those that are not aware, there was a railway line along
though Kirkby Moorside up to Seamer Junction that closed in
about 1950 (see 'This is York film'). A lot of the stations
still exist, but sadly Kirkby Moorside was flattened by the
council a few years ago for redevelopment. There was also a line
that went south through Malton to Driffield that is currently
being partly reinstated near Wetwang (I kid you not!)
You may also have heard that due to funding cuts, the NRM is one
museum, along with Shildon and the Manchester Museum of Science
and Industry, that is being considered for closure.

Did you spot a rag top 2a in castleton per chance? My cousin
lives on the high street.

I had chance to go on Wednesday to see the set of Streaks..... I
got trodden on, bumped into, jostled, shouted at, and swore at.
The teenagers were well behaved compared to the Octogenarians
that swamped the place. But I got to natter with Drivers,
Firemen, Shed workers, Boiler cleaners, Coalers and such. A
bucket list experience carried out.
