tax disc question

My S1 86" has been SORN for 6 months or so now.
I took out insurance cover then I went online to apply for the
road tax.
It all went through no problems but i noticed the disc they are
sending me is due to start at the beginning of next month and it
didn't give me an option to start it earlier.
What i'd like to know is, when it comes in the post next week am
I legal to drive it?
its is tax exempt.

Does it have an MOT? I assume you've had it done within the last
six months if not recently. If it's on the system not sure whey
they've not taxed it from the start of this month. If you were
paying real money for it they would have done.

Sorry yes. I'd forgotten pre-1960 was now exempt. As long as you
are insured I can't see how you can be nicked.

You could be nicked for failure to display a valid tax disc
there for making your insurance void .

This. Chances are low though of being caught depending on how
often you use it.

I would have sacked off getting the tax disc online and gone to
the Post Office. In theory you have no Tax so therefore are not
legally allowed to drive it on the road, therefore voiding your
insurance.
In this day and age I wouldn't worry too much about displaying a
tax disc, does anybody actually check them unless you've been
stopped? The reason why I say that is due to the rise of ANPR
which would check your details against a database to see if you
had valid insurance / tax. I would assume that it would flag up
as you not having tax as it does not start until 01 Aug 13. You
must have seen the programmes where it flags up and plods screen
that a vehicle has not insurance / tax / reported stolen etc
etc.
At the end of it, it's your license and if you went to court I
think you would have a hard time claiming as your defence that
the computer said no!

You could:
As soon as your Tax disc arrives, send it off for a refund (I
know there is no refund involved) therefore pleasing the DVLA
and the powers that be as you have handed back your current Tax
disc.
Then you could go to the Post Office with your paperwork to get
a Tax disc that starts there and then, this way you can claim
stupidity if anybody questions your DVLA tax disc and say that
you sent it off as soon as you remembered you had already done
one online. Can you be prosecuted for having two tax discs???
So therefore if you get stopped by plod you have a current Tax
disc and everybody should be happy.

I'd phone the DVLA and ask them what to do, as it's a NIL disc
they may simply re-issue one starting from 1st July.
Theoretically despite it not being taxed as it NIL tax and no
money is concerned I doubt anyone will care, plus I'm guessing
on an ANPR check it'll come up as licenced.

^^^ That would be my suggestion too. All a bit of a nonsensical
waste of taxpayers money really. Why not just issue a one-off
cast bronze plaque saying "Historic Vehicle, Tax Free" with the
Reg No engraved on it ?
in copperplate italics of course...
