Well I suppose you'd rather be looking at them than looking for
them; and if they get confiscated or some other shit for
unauthorized whatever, it ain't worth the trouble, I suppose.
Worth airing the suggestion though, I thought.

For occasional/DIY use, I just buy cheapo sets from Lidl. I'd
originally assumed they'd be made of plasticine, but actually
they're not at all bad and a lot better than my own attempts at
sharpening.

I get mine from UK Drills. Just Google them. Cheap, and decent
qwality. I have just bought a pack of ten 3mm bits from them and
it came to a couple quid inc p&p. Not worth pissing about
sharpening them at that price...

To be fair they'd never confiscate anything because unless it's
in the system it doesn't exist and what's yours is yours and
what's the companies is theirs. If they can legally do it
they'll do it within reason. Tool control is tight as a gnats
chuff when you think about it. Not only does everything in the
hangar have to be accounted for but there's the second level
that everything used on an aircraft is booked out from tool
store too. When work is finished on an aircraft each day
everything used on it is booked out and booked back in. If it
aint they'll move heaven and Earth to find it. If you want to
talk rivet counting (actually we use fastners) they are counted
out and the unused ones are counted back in. Something as small
as a fastener can bring an aircraft down if it gets into the
wrong place. There's no pockets in fitters overalls. It all
seems like overkill but it's really not. All this control is a
MILSPEC requirement and it's just one of the reasons why
military aircraft are so damned expensive to make.

Tell me about it... I once spent half an hour whilst one of your
blokes literally counted out 400 rivets from a bag of 800 and
gave me the other 400 to return to the suppliers!

Dave, the Series 2 club are mere neophytes compared to our place
when it comes to rivet counting. Nobody counts rivets as good as
us.

Thinking about it again though I might understand this. Some of
the small screw fasteners we use (about M4 size but an aerospace
thread) with little springs n that integrated into them to stop
them vibrating loose you might guess cost at most 3 quid or so
each. There might be 20 or 30 of them holding an access panel
in. They're about £80 each :rolleye0012:

i buy thier sets as well, little blue box full of bits ranging
from i think 1mm to 10mm complete in 1/2mm increments
i reckon they're pretty good value
it's the bigger sizes and morse taper drills that i need to be
able to look after myself properly, i've a reasonable size
pillar drill and not long collected myself a nice lathe (i'm not
an engineer), next thing to find is space to put another shed to
dedicate to drilling and turning metals and of course the shed
itself

As a toolmaker just coming up for retirement I can do a
reasonable job by hand on all sizes over about 2mm my eyesight
fails me on anything smaller. I do a lot for the mechanics at a
lorry place next to work but have to admit for most people it is
a black art. I tend to need to grind nearly all new drills from
most suppliers to make them cut at all so even new are no use to
most people! I have a lathe and milling machine in my home
workshop so will be able to continue making things when I
retire.

I can well believe that. I have loads of MOD surplus aerospace
grade bolts and fasteners (lots of which finding their way onto
Land Rovers in almost laughably low-spec applications), many in
packets stating unit price. Some are ridiculously expensive! I
bought a pallet full of these nuts and bolts at auction for
about £35, and another full of rivets (both solid and pop/Avdel)
for another £30 or so... lord knows what they actually cost the
MOD - thousands!
