Drill Bits

After a partially successful session trying to sharpen some of
my drill bits by hand on a bench grinder I've decided that for
all but the larger drills it's a waste of time. So I'm left with
a couple of options here.
1. Buy something that makes a reasonable job of sharpening them
and can put the correct clearance behind the cutting edge (lots
of cheap sharpeners that probably don't do a good job).
or
2. Bin off the drills that are blunt or too hard to sharpen and
keep the resharpend one's where hole accuracy doesn't matter and
buy some new ones for when it does.
I think I'm hedging to option 2 but if I'm going to buy some new
drills there's no point buying the usual no-name shite or
overpriced Bosch or Black&Decker which aren't much better IMO.
There's HSS and then there's HSS. So what do people on here who
engineer for a living recommend? I think my shortlist would be
Dormer, Presto or Guhring. None of them are cheap but is it
worth pushing the boat out further for Titanium Nitride coated
or HSCobalt drills? Where's the best place to get them?

We use bog standard Dormer drills at work,
I tend to sharpen them all straight out the box, I've never had
a new drill bit that drills a round hole.
It's a piece of piss to sharpen them, I'll show you how to
sharpen them if your coming t' pit, that's probably the next
time I'll see you...

We use Dormer drills as well. Ours are split point drills, not
sure what it does but they dont drill too bad.

I use dormers at home - at work we use a large range of stuff,
most of which is very very old...
For morse taper drills especially it is easy to make a tool to
help you get the flanks equal for nice even cutting. As long as
it has a centre drill on the shank/taper you should be able to
make something quite useful here. Small drills should sharpen
fine, if a little crude compared to their larger siblings. How
is the grinding wheel on your bench grinder? One that is running
off centre can be a ballache, especially on small drill bits.

I've loads of blunt drills, I have a device to sharpen them on
the grinder but haven't had a lot of success with it, I had
considered this

there's every chance i'll be along to put me dunces hat on and
watch a bit of this sharpening stuff, i get the bloody angles
wrong, point off centre and mostly turn a blunt drill into scrap

Suppose you will turn up with a bike, you then put it on a stand
and connect your grinding wheel to the pedals, it was a sight to
behold in the fifties, what amused me was a few days prior to
this fella appearing was the piece of paper pushed through your
door announcing that the "machine" would be in the street to
sharpen scissors, knives etc, don't remember drill bits though!!
Oh and he wanted his piece of paper back :thumbs:

Have they not got a shop at your works where one of the bods
will make the edges keen for you, Devs?

T'pit drill sharpening master class. Sounds like a good idea.
How about a follow up welding masterclass. Finding the 32A
dedicated supply might be a problem though. :thumbs:

Yes they do. They have some mega expensive machine costing
thousands and thousands of pounds that they use. Obviously they
aren't allowed to hand sharpen drills because they are no longer
a precision tool. However, getting any unauthorised or personal
tools through tool control procedures into a controlled CAT3
area isn't impossible but as good as. Every drill bit would have
to be booked in and out and it's highly unlikely they'd let them
in anyway. I took my torque wrenches in for calibration and
ended up wishing I'd not bothered. There might be other areas I
could get them sharpened so I'll have to ask someone who has
access to the shops. Just for info I think they primarily use
Presto drill bits at work.
