Fitting Rover P4 handbrake mechanism.

Right first and foremost don't think "Why?" it's more of a
"How?"
I know a few folk on here have had dalliances with the dear old
Rover Auntie. >rock<
Rover P4 seem to use 11" drum brakes front and rear. The rear's
of course having mechanical hanbrake linkage.
While the hubs and back plates are of a different design it
looks like the P4 100 at the very least shares the same brake
shoes as an 11" Land Rover drum brake.
Does anyone have any pictures of the in drum handbrake mechanism
on a P4. Internet is not bearing fruit.
Obviously the idea is that non hydraulic operated rear fiddle
brakes could be created using a modified LR backplate. Off road
use only of course.

Actually some digging revealed this beauty:
HTML http://www.head2head.free-online.co.uk/Rover/pics/cyl2_t.jpg
Would appear to be a Girling cylinder running the same mounts as
a normal LR unit just with the extra hole for the handbrake
linkage connection.
It looks as if the output sliders would mate to a specific set
of shoes....hmmm

I have run a 90 and a 95 P4 in the past but never considered the
brake mod to fit them on the landie. Next time I am in the store
i will look to see if i kept a manual. You could try the P4
drivers guild (posh name for a car club !)

Cheers! I'd be interested to know the length of the cylinders.
If they weren't a bloomin fortune I'd just buy one and have a
measure up. They're also 1" instead of 1.250" so brake bias
valves may be needed. Still doable.

I have a "spare" pair of cylinders on my shelf, they are worth
approximately £7000000, I went to Reading for them.
They're exactly the same as a landrover cylinder apart from the
pull tab bit for the hand brake.
The P4 rear axle is the same as an 80" rear axle apart from the
diff is central and not offset.

I'm going up the shed tomorrow after work probably so if I think
on I'll find them and compare them for you but I'm pretty sure
they're exactly the same....

Cheers Gents! If they are dimensionally compatible it's more
than encouraging.
They may cost a fortune but it's still not a great deal compared
to some uber camp twin dildo hydraulic fiddle brake assembly.

Hi,
Here is a piccy of a pait of wheel cylinders that I have just
removed from my 1959 LWB S2.

This truck was last on the road in 1974, but I actually drove it
a couple of weeks ago. That's the best part of 40 years ... got
the mildew to prove it.
I was planning to have these cylinders sleeved down to 1", as
part of a cunning and devious plan.
I understand that these cylinders have a family resemblance to
those used on the Rover P5. but the P5 cylinders ar 7/8" dia,
while mine are 1.25"dia. I understand that the P5 cylinders have
a handbrake system, while mine don't. I have no idea how the S2
and P5 cylinder compare size wise, so don't know if they are
interchangable. P5 cylinders seem to be available on Ebay for
about £80 to £90, which I presume means they are new. I don't
even have a part number for the S2 cylinders.
Can my cylinders be adapted to accept a handbrake linkage?
Dunno!
Can my cylinders be fitted to the later backplates? Nothing is
impossible, but the holes for the wheel cylinders are a
different shape ... my cylinders have three studs, for starters.
My adjusters are the "screw in wedge" type, similar (possibly
identical) to my handbrake, so that means a hole at bottom of
the backplate, rather than a "post". My back-plates have
adjustable shoe-steady posts.
Could I be persuaded to part with them? Possibly, I'm not sure
about probably. Would they be any use to you? Dunno.

Now that's interesting. A 1.250" cylinder with the blocks and
pawls for the handbrake. Only thing seems missing from them is
the draw "blade" that the handbrake link attaches to.
Odd about that 3rd threaded mounting . The P4 ones seem to be
very similar to LR cylinder with the circular inset for the
backplate and the two threaded bars looking just the same.
New P4 cylinders off the bay of e are about £40 so it's OK you
don't have to part with them but I wouldn't be throwing them
away!
Interesting stuff! :)
