Could someone enlighten me on the significance of a Suffix C
gearbox? Also, what would you consider to be the strongest
series gearbox?

Common opinion seems to hold suffix 'D' boxes as being the
toughest. I'm sure more experienced assistance will be along
soon. . . . . :smile1

Suffix 'D' are indeed supposedly the toughest of the boxes.....
To be fair most of the Series 2 ones are pretty robust...

Thanks for the replies. The reason I asked is because my S1
with a Rover 3.5V8 and 2a g/box has just finished off the
layshaft bearings in the box and I had to drive back from
Warwick to Chelmsford yesterday in top gear, towing a
Brockhouse!
I need the S1 and have to get it sorted asap and a replacement
seems the most likely option because I haven't the time or skill
to strip the existing box and have no idea what else I might
find wrong. At least installing another would give me time as
long as it was ok, and that's the tricky part.

Is there any way you can tell the condition of a gearbox,
especially the layshaft bearings, when it's fully built and
complete, but off the vehicle?

Not really, but it doesn't take long to strip one down to look
and replace as necessary. The hardest bit of the job is usually
taking the box out the vehicle. It's less of a pain than
having to rag the gearbox out to do it at a later date.
