I've been to see a motor yesterday, after a tip off. It's been
sat in a damp shed for 7 years, dirt floors. It's a RHD 12V
Petrol Lightweight, and it's been suggested that it's a 1975
(951xxxxxA with a 951xxxxxC engine) . The rear crossmember looks
a little flaky, the top bulkhead isn't great, the main bulkhead
has corrosion issues, as do a few (accessible) areas of the
chassis. It's all there, save for the 90 seats and frames, and a
home made seatbelt bar. (I have a set of basic Series seats on
frames) There's a hardtop for it with catflap (semi dismantled)
and all the SLTs are flat. I take it that it drove into where it
now resides, but it's had a few bits removed. Turns out there
may be an "issue" with paperwork relating to the "owner" and
"keeper" status after a marital split. It is registered where it
has been parked, but the "keeper" has not seen the "owner" for
years, and the shed is falling in on it. Would anyone think that
£300 is too cheap for a first offer? Especially considering the
paperwork problems that may arise from an ownership transfer.
Personally I think it's a later vehicle, more like 1977, but I'm
trying to find a list of approximate chassis numbers to date it
by.
What would anyone else give for something in this state? I
don't really "do" Lightweights, but I could see one coming in
handy from time to time....

What's to loose offering him £300? worst he can say is no.
I gave £900 for mine, I had to make a new bulkhead for it and
sort the brakes and that but there was no paperwork issues...

Nothing (within reason) is too cheap for a first offer. After
all, the seller is only going to haggle upwards.

Chassis suffix relates to all before 1978/9 with the onset of
VIN. I would like to know where in the numerical sequence it is,
as that will help to date it better. I supposed casting dates
are.useful AFTER I buy it......

Doesnt seem an unreasonable offer , about twice scrap value,
though I'd be surprised if you can get a lightweight even
needing restoring for that, worth a try

Ah, didn't realise that.
I'm sure when I've used it before it's given me the actual year
of manufacture ???

Calvin is good for series 2's as they seemed to change the
suffix every year, whereas the series 3 I'm sure were all a
suffix?
Anyway James, you would be armed better if you knew the military
registration! Most of those can be worked out to year of first
registration by that. I don't think £300 is unreasonable, I
think my limit would be about £500 at what you have described,
they do sometimes change hands for stupid money, but what
doesn't nowadays.

I think £300 is a fair first offer. Without paperwork it's a
chance, I wouldn't want to go too far north of that. If you can
find the military data plate it will be easy to date providing
it's an army one as they changed (almost) every year. RAF and RN
didn't so aren't as easy to date.
The home made seatbelt bar may be genuine, if it looks like the
one on my left hooker then it is pukka:
