SU damper types

Just wondering how vital it is that my dampers are different in
each SU
Both carbs look like this

One damper looks like this, with a flush bottom

And one looks like this, with a groove right down the bottom
over where the needle protrudes

Could be on to something there! They both have chokes, but one
choke never did anything. And it was the carb with the flush
bottom that the choke did nothing. The other carb the choke
definitely works, and the engine needs it on a bit all the time
to run.
Any more thoughts?? 8)

I take it these are supposed to be a match pair of a v8?, if so
looks like in the past someone has put odd bits in.
The only way to find out would be to talk to an SU specialist.
I ran SU on an mg and the choke works in two stages, first pull
and the needle drops slightly, this enrichens the fuel mixture,
next stage a cam opens the butterfly to let more air in.
What the slot in the bottom is for I'm not sure.

Just had a look at mine and they're both flat bottomed as they
are a pair and still have their tags on.
You have a mix and match.Reckon you've got one early carb and
one later.There are two types of suction chamber,easily
identified by the diagram here (5a and 5b).

If the damper rods are the same I'd say someone's been fiddling
with the slides in the past.If they're different then it ain't a
pair.

Cheers for looking jagger. Looks like I need to a bit more
research into what bodies I've got and what pistons match. Both
my bodies are the same so one damper is definitely wrong.

Just done a full rebuild on them, and it doesn't seem to matter!
If it went any faster it would take off. The carb with the flush
bottomed piston just doesn't react to the enrichment
valve/choke. Only needs half choke on the other carb for a few
minutes then its fine.
Very pleased! Will still keep an eye out for a cheap matching
pair though.
