       DLC & the MOT
By: pete Date: June 27, 2013, 6:49 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Last week DLC was due for MOT. Fully checked over two days
before, all OK. Morning of test day, lights rechecked parking
       brake adjusted all good.
Arive at test station feeling optomistic. Hah!!. The fucking
       thing hates me.
Fail on battery insecure? and no bloody headlights, drive home
       pissed off.
Folowing morning set out to solve the problems. Hoik battery out
of its holder , make a clamp and refit. now for the lights. Dash
board out and check switch. Power in ok, pwer out ok, down to
the dip switch. Power in ok no power out, switch is fucked, and
bolts rusted solid. Resort to angle grinder and out comes old
switch, leaving some skin in the footwell.
New switch attached to wires, then off again. The spades are
coroded to fuck, Curse have a brew and a smoke, this is
conducive to real thought. This isn't the first dip switch I
have had to change. Relocate new switch to bottom rail of dash,
that should keep the bugger dry, rewire the headlights including
new earths. Hold breath. and switch on. The buggers work, even
the dash mounted dipswitch, I'm no sparky, so I'm chuffed to
       fuck
Two days later go for retest. That's neat, says he of the
battery clamp, now switch the lights on, dip ok main beam ok,
come and get the ticket. By the way, you have a side light off.
       It really does hate me

Your tester might be quite strict (not that I am inferring that
this is either a good or bad thing), I don't have a battery
clamp in 'Flo', and the battery floats around like an abandoned
lilo. This has never been picked up an issue by my tester.

My old dad was fined for 'insecure battery', mind you he was
targeted by Traffic Patrol no doubt due to the large amount of
canvas visible on a couple of tyres, no hand brake not that
the h-brake on a J2 van necessarily worked straight out of the
factory, and numerous TICs. They had a good day, he didn't
       :haha:

I "think" insecure battery used to be an advisory, but in the
latest round of MOT changes it changed to a fail.
I'm sure someone will be along to confirm or deny that, but it
could explain why it hasn't failed in the past ???

What he said ^^^ it has now been changed to a fail. They keep
moving the goal posts. Nomain beam warning light used to be a
fail then downgraded to an advisory and now back to a fail. Had
one i had never seen before at work the otherday and that
       was"speedo could not be illuminated.

The constantly shifting goal posts are fun for testers too! :-?

So the speedo now has to be illuminated but doesnt need to work
My last two MOTs have the same milage reading :)

The speedo fails if its obviously not working but as the tester
isn't required to drive the vehicle on the road its a bit
       pointless.

I was at the understanding that it only had to have a milage
       that was readable
