OK, we'll take the detail a bit at a time
The site is Eastney Pumping Station on the south east corner of
Portsea island (open last full weekend of every month, admission
free. . . . . :smilewide:). Pompey has a very low water table so
the duty of the pumping station was to raise the gravity-drained
sewage up into a holding tank ready to be released from Fort
Cumberland on the out going tide (it often came back in rofl)
About 7 years ago when I was still a student I got shown the
place and some mates and I cleaned it up and nursed some of the
little stuff back to life. When we hit final year 18 months
later it looked like game over but about two years ago some
older guys came out of the woodwork and have taken on a regular
commitment to keeping things going and carrying on the
       restoration work.
The group of small(er) engines in the second pic where all
installed as museum exhibits although they came from various
pumping stations around Hampshire. The main event is the top
picture. That is one end of a Crossley 'Y2' horizontal gas
engine, driving a 250,000gph centrifugal pump. Originally there
was three of them but only two remain and one is partially
dismantled. They do not run, there is no gas supply and
absolutely no chance of getting one. To the best of my knowledge
they are the only two in existence. About 16" bore and 2' stroke
       if memory serves.
Installation was completed in 1904, adding to the interest value
of the site, as just across the road are a pair of 1897 built
Watt beam engines (one runs on steam, one on 'leccy). These are
the youngest beam engines I know of with all mod-cons,
compounding, piston valves etc. There must have been a change of
management to go from this very conservative thinking to the
first ever installation of its type with the Y2's just 7 years
       later!
If anybody is prepared to risk looking like they give a shit I
will happily work my way slowly through every engine, operating
procedures, ancilliary equipment etc :-?. (in between anything
else that tickles my fancy drink(*& )

If you do plan on coming down specially, mention it on here in
advance. Sometime there is more to see, like special
exhibitions, other times staff might be thin on the ground and
you would need to ask nicely to get a ten minute look in the gas
       engine house.
And now for something completely different. . .

The Cambridge Museum of Technology, situated at the Sewage
Pumping Station in Cheddars Lane, has steam, gas and electric
       pumps!
  HTML http://www.museumoftechnology.com/
  HTML http://www.museumoftechnology.com/
The gas engines are run from Propane cylinders, as the gas
works, which was next door, has gone and been replaced by
       Tescos!
If you ever have the miss-fortune to come to Cambridge, remember
it's full of students and bicycles, it's probably the only place
       I would recommend to visit!
There are some fancy colleges and churches, but compared to a
       Sewage Pump? :smilewide:

There used to be loads of those engines and winches on Worthing
beach - some are still there and in use.

Cracking bit of large machinery in the second posted pic. Now if
only you'd got in to see it without permission, in a 28DL
stylee, I'd be even more impressed. ;D

GASP! But that would have been trespassing. Which whilst only a
civil offence and unlikely to result in prosecution, would be
       breaking the law! wagfinger
I would never indulge in illicit urban exploration or buildering
activities. Any photos which may appear here will always have
been obtained in a strictly above board manner. :smilewide:
In this case we really where there by invitation :o

It's only breaking the law if you get caught. ;-)

And yes, we do only have one shade of green paint ::)
