Series sump sealing....

Has anybody sealed a series sump with the later TDI type mastic
stuff? My LR dealership mechanic friend (and series fan),
reckons I should ditch the inferior leaking gaskets and go down
this route (he gets it at discount so not quite so eye watering
as my previous mainstream quote)....? I have a 3 bolt sump leak
and it is driving me insane (as I have fixed all the other
leaks)..

No, but you could use a bead of RTV (which is what they use for
the TDi I think) on both sides of the gasket.

I use the fat soft card gasket, preferably oil soaked first,
then dried off, and liberally smeared in Silicon sealant. It's
soft, yet sticky, and oh so oil tight. If it's leaking from the
rear main area, I reckon the sump gasket is a red herring, and
it's the cork seal crucifix jobbies. Proper twats them things.

Yeah, thought had crossed my mind. They are new in but it
leaked the same before they were changed.. It literally drips
off those three rear bolts and nowhere else. Someone suggested
a good bob of sealant in this area when replacing the gasket.
Can't be arsed with continually dropping the oil to chase this
leak, apparently lr felt the same hence the move to silicone on
tdi's and later...

One hint... with the sump off, you could "spirit rinse" the back
of the block internally, and then add a rib of Silicon where the
joint of the rear main is. Squidge it in well, and keep a
continuous line between this and the sump face. It might help
from the inside out.

Is the "fat soft card gasket" a none standard item? (ie fatter
that an normal one?) Mine leaks from just about everywhere and I
have been collecting new gaskets and oil seals for when i cba.
But when looking for gaskets do people just source oem ones or
am i missing out on a trick?
For now oil seems cheap maintenance.

Dont all series engines leak after a while no matter what you do
with them? My 2.25 diesel does even when i think i have it
sorted it does not last . Recently done a V8 and found Britpart
gasket less than half the thickness of an O/E one. Sealed it
with RTV and now the sump is going rusty.

Home made cork gaskets were the only success I had on the Prima,
genuine Perkins and cheap copies all seemed to leak to varying
degrees even though both the sump and block were both straight.

Permatex Form A (non setting) and the original spec gasket. Next
time you want to take the sump off you will hate yourself but
until then it wont leak :rolleye0012:
