two Q's - Fitting Capstan Winch & Electric Cooling Fans

Heya all!
As the title, couple of questions.
Firstly I've got a capstan winch to fit onto Aryette, my 1983 S3
88" when I swapped to the 2.5n/a I made a point of retaining
both the starter dog & the hand throttle ;D
However as my Dad pointed out my chassis hasn't got the row of
mounting holes in the front x-member (google has failed me in
finding an image of these, but can get a pic of them on his 107"
later)
Is there any way of fitting one without these?
Also what size of electric fan do folks use for a 2.5n/a? Mine
seems to get a little warm on a run with the 9" pacet I've got
:-?

Rivnuts are your friend - have a google.
You will need a metric crank bolt or convert the one you have
Biggest fan you can fit in :smilewide:

Is it actually getting warm :-? for definate? Is it possible you
have a mismatch between the temperature sender and the guage as
a result of the engine swap? i know they are not all the same
and when you do a TDI conversion for example you have to bugger
about with senders?
Also if it's getting hot on a run, as in when you are moving and
air is getting through the rad it should cool sufficiently, it
may be worth checking the thermostat, if it is getting hot sat
in traffic that is more likely to be a fan issue.

You will need to drill the holes ... Rivinuts as FT says
Depending on the winch you have, some use brackets off the
timing cover for the drive shaft ... You cold have a problem
there with the 2.5 as it might not have the same holes
If its supported off the chassis then it's just a case of
drilling holes and rivitnuts to fit it
Not quite sure how you will fit the hand throttle to a 2.5 with
its cable throttle, will need a bit of thinking
On the cooling, would tend to go with espacekiller ... Are you
sure it's getting hot , and not a garage / sensor miss match
It's very rare a LR diesel needs a cooling fan, even off road in
the uk, let alone needing a bigger one

The mounting points on my chassis are just drilled holes with
Rivnuts in. You'll need a Rivnut tool to insert them.
Silly question regarding the heat issue - are you sure you have
the fan mounted the right way around? I'm not suggesting you
have, but there are pusher and puller fans. I'd also second the
potential mismatch of sender to gauge. I know on S2a's there is
an early and late one, and if you fit the wrong sender then the
gauge gives you a heart attack, might be the same for your S3
gauge vs a later sender on the 2.5

Re cooling, the perkins in mine runs hotter than the 2 1/4 I had
in the past and the 12'' Kenlowe fan kicks in frequently. That
said, I have set the temp on the low side at about 80isch (I
think 90isch would be the correct temp?) (with the sensor in the
top hose) to keep the temp gauge way clear of the red (had to
change connection to fan to make sure it 'pulls in'..) .

Re capstan winch, I have just done it for a Fairey, and yes,
lots of drilling needed, here some pics:

The main problem is to fit the right drive dog to the crank
shaft centred and without coming loose I think (see my other
thread capstan winch on Perkins Prima).
Some instructions can be found on the web, eg this one for a
Aeroparts winch but you get an idea how to throw it in (pdf
file)...:

They're not listing them at the moment but Dunsfold were selling
bags of the genuine capstan winch mounting rivnuts recently on
eBay. I might be worth giving them a call, they were only a few
quid.

Hiya, Evo here. ;)
I had a single 12" Kenlowe on my previous 2.5NA lightweight, and
that worked fine. Only really came on in summer, but kept the
engine cool enough, even when sat in traffic on really hot days.

Thanks all :)
At the moment very little is happening, on saturday only had the
chance to sort the rocker cover leak out, tighten the belt &
sling a can of radflush into her (which is still in there)
Haven't been using her, or any of my vehicles over the weekend
as had a luton-bodied sprinter from work (was oh soo fun driving
that through the center of london on friday :banghead )
Been back in Aryette today, felt soo nice to be driving
something that handles & is actually responsive! :smilewide:
Think am going to drain the rad on thursday evening, see what
that does.
Then if needed fit the new water pump friday evening/saturday
(along with sort the sump gasket leak out)
