       Money box to hot box

OLLRites that have seen my shed will recall that it has a wood
burner in the corner. I was in the habit of turbo charging this
with old engine oil until the day I got the air feed just right
and it sounded like a V1 but accelerating... The casting
cracked across the top, the stainless steel flexi flue
carbonised, and it threw boiling oil from every orifice.
I've now obtained, at OLLR rates, a substantial safe (collect
today). I intend converting this into a multi fuel heat factory.
Somebody posted on here about having done a similar job... The
general architecture, draw plate, grate, air vents, flue, I am
happy about, but I have reservations about the ability of me and
my Stihl saw to cut the bloody thing.
Two penny worth anybody? Oh, if you never hear from me again
you'll know that shifting a safe post heart attack was the
action of -I quote- '...a bloody suicidal old fool.'

Collected it. The key piece of equipment was my ancient Tirfor.
The safe is a Chubb with walls three inches thick. Unless I can
work out a way to cut the necessary apertures it'll be getting
       weighed in.

Under the outer shell is concrete filled with tungstun ball
bearings. Best way to got through it is a thermal lance
Most of the weight is from the concrete.

Some early fireproof safes are filled with asbestos - so be
careful if you are cutting it open.

If it is the concrete filled type, I would be wary of turning it
into a wood burner. Concrete doesn't react too well when it gets
       very hot.....

Ah well. I haven't attempted to cut into it yet. Thermic lances
are in short supply hereabouts... It is a fairly modern design-a
Chubb Conqueror. If it has hard ball bearings in concrete, they
are there, presumably, to make it impossible to drill.
There is an alternative safe available to me but it is much
older and rather larger and I definitely don't fancy the
asbestos option. I wasn't aware that there was possibly a
concrete core but I do know about concrete's tendency to go bang
and throw itself around when heated...we considered it a vital
component of any good bonfire as kids. Asbestos cement was best.
Thanks for comments. Looks like it'll be going to the scrapyard.

Search you tube for that Kevin McLeod bloke from grand designs.
He built house from recycled stuff etc, cow dung and piss floors
       etc.
He made a stove from a safe and gave detailed instructions on
how to make your own thermal lance >Htlr<, it looked quite easy
to be fair for cutting a hole I the top for the flue etc.
