Wuppertal overhead railway

As before a trip to Czech afforded me a chance to see and ride
on an unusual railway, very suited to anoraks
A lot of it is suspended above the river Wupper

The trains are fast and frequent, the equivalent to our tube but
above ground

I have been on that - fantastic bit of engineering, although one
of the trains fell off a few years ago!

We used to travel on that as a kid every year when we went to
see my farthers teaching friends. Its an awesome bit of kit but
i wouldnt like to be Pway engineer on it!
Its well worth a trip if anyone is heading in that direction
again.

I bet its a twat if someone flushes whilst crossing the dual
carriageway :-?
This just goes to prove why need to return to one party
communism ;-) we could build one of these ove the M1 no need to
dif up fields for HS2 :-?

...that's 'Vorsprung durch Technik' for you... but it doesn't
have a pissoir on board as far as I remember.... and yes, in
1999 some Monday-morning-hangover tekkis left a track clamp on
the track and the first train in he morning derailed and fell
into the Wupper with heavy bits coming after it and smashing
through the coaches... 5 dead and about 50 injured...

In 1998 the German high speed train ICE crashed at 250km/h with
about 100 dead....:

...as for speed the German Transrapid is one of the fastest
trains (innovative magnet technology) with up to 500km/h, as
shown in this commercial video:

only track in operation (to my knowledge) is in Shanghai
(airport to city centre):

However, this thing crashed as well on the test track in Germany
in 2006 by colliding with a service (!) train... 23 dead :

(in Russian, for a
change...). Being a German (and a (Rudolf) Diesel fan) it pains
me that despite all these good ideas and engineering for public
transport, working on the principle of 'the cheapest bidder
wins' and/or carelessness is messing it up on a regular basis
(the new Berlin airport which is now 2years overdue is another
example...). Anyway, probably since the Titanic we should now
that who invents the fastest ship, train, whatever, is also
inventing the future disaster at the same time... end of
lecture.
