Chassis repairs, when and when not to

Over on the rivet counters forum, a guy has asked for opinions
on his next move in regards to his chassis. He says, he's found
some holes and the PO has badly repaired a few old holes, he's
unsure whether to try a repair himself or whether he should just
buy a new chassis.
Now, I appear to be the only person advocating an attempt at a
repair. My reasoning being, he should strip the truck down, cut
away the bad and also remove the PO bodges, and then asses. He
says he can weld pretty well so I can't see any problems here.
Everyone else seems to be of the opinion that there is no point
even contemplating this, he should immediately spend the £1500 +
on a new chassis - before he even strips the truck. Surely with
my approach he could find the chassis will repair and last him a
good few years, saving himself a lot of pounds, or he can find
it's cheese in which case he's not lost anything. Remember,
nobody but the poster has seen the chassis in question so they
do not know how bad it is. I've seen some amazing chassis
repairs which have cost the repairer a few beer tokens in
materials but nowhere near the price of a new chassis. Just
seems a bit daft the majority opinion is "fit new parts, don't
repair", what do you all think?
The chassis on my own project is fifty years old, near perfect
over about 95% and required a few plates welding in, three years
after I did the work it's as good as when I'd finished.
(admittedly it's not been on the road in that time, but it has
spent the majority of that time open to the elements with no
bodywork covering it)
Am I the only person around who thinks it's always worth an
attempt at repair, before you throw the towel in and replace
with new?

And the same people will then lecture on "originality"...!

That's one of the things I'm not understanding - this is a rivet
counter forum, they're supposed to be all about originality yet
they're advice seems to oppose this.
Obviously there comes a time when a chassis is past repairing, I
know that. But surely strip the damn thing down first and see
what's what?!

No it's not - there is a minority of vocal users who might be
considered 'rivet counters' but I think by far the majority
aren't :smilewide:

Robin has hit the perverbial rivet on the head. Problem is that
the most frequent posters set the tone, doesn't actually matter
if they are right or not. Probably means that they dont have a
life outside of the forum.
I don't have much time for that forum these days for this
reason, amongst others...
The only reason I keep my membership up is that they have some
pretty good discounts with suppliers these days. The saving I
got from Exmoor pretty much paid for several year's
membership....
Don't sweat it, this is the only forum you really need.

It hasn't bothered me, I'm just asking because it doesn't stack
up in my (admittedly fuzzy) mind and so I wondered what people
thought on here.
I've tended to use this other forum more as a technical
resource. OLLR is a much better place to hang around in for so
many reasons, the tech info here is great, I just find it's
quite nice to have a second source sometimes too.

Keep repairing until there's nothing left decent or safe to weld
to in my opinion.....

The chassis for Sandy S2 88", has had:
A rear half chassis.
Gearbox cross-member.
The main cross-member has been replaced with flat steel and has
no hole for the PTO shaft!
All out-riggers have been replaced.
Both dumb irons, replaced.
The bottom of the engine cross-member has new metal.
Engine mounts replaced with S/H ones.
Quite a few holes have been repaired.
An extra out-rigger for the left hand fuel tank has been added,
so I can use an old tank as a storage box.
It needs a couple more coats of paint and then I can start to
reassemble!
A real "Grandad's Axe/Trigger's Broom"

I'm not a rivet counter! (You need to be able to count for
that!)
