Progress report, MOT and Zenith

Progress report on a modest SWB Series 3:
My 88" 2.25 (with the shite parabolics) has been SORN for the
year since I bought it as I didn't have the time or energy to do
the necessary to get it running halfway decently.
It was a bastard to drive home from Brum to Sussex last year:
heavy steering; wandering all over road; threatening to do a 180
waltz at every braking; idling lumpily and cutting out;
deafening in the uninsulated truck cab.
Took off the truck cab for the sake of my ears, and have now
done the following (and it's beginning to feel and look like a
normal S3):
- slacked off all the spring shackle bolts, put half a dozen
bags of ballast in the back, moved it around the drive a bit and
then retightened to correct torque. Then left it with 15 bags in
the back for three months. That's certainly got it riding a bit
better, albeit with a starboard list (I know it should have a
port one when unloaded). Might have knackered the bushes though.
- got rid of the stupid little Halfords rally size steering
wheel and put an old S3 one on
- got rid of the stupid blue/red piping "rally" seats and put in
the pair from my old S3 (now gone to to assist other leafers to
survive longer......)
- ditto the stupid blue, green and red full four point harness
seat belts. Installed new inertia belts instead.
- gave up fiddling with the Weber carb. Bought a secondhand
unreconditioned Zenith on ebay from a bloke who breaks
lightweights. Stuck it on and my vehicle immediately runs
better.
- rescued the Fairey FWH's from my old vehicle and stuck 'em on
the new one (I know, I know what some of you think about
FWH....)
Finally put it through an MOT on Saturday and it failed on a
front wheel bearing only. Just ordered on ebay a bearing
replacement kit (LR part RTC3534) for £18.90 from a trader who
swears the bearings are genuine OEM and not blue box. We'll
see.... :rolleye0012:
Next, got to buy a pot of Brionze Green and a new brush to cover
the matt combat green paint job and some Nitromors to get the
black off the bumper and cappings.
So, might actually have something I can enjoy owning this time
next week.

Just noticed it didn't sit level even then, although it did seem
high and skittish at the back end. Will post some more nest
week now I've done some work to it.
