Bought a second hand chassis - how to make it last?

This morning I've acquired a second hand chassis originally from
a 1978 SWB diesel with a view to putting it under my 1971 SWB
Petrol.
It's had a new rear crossmember and outriggers in the past to a
decent standard, plus repair patches of various standards in
places. It's also still got the steering box in situ. Once I've
made good the bits I don't like, what would people suggest to do
to it to make it last before I start swapping stuff over? I've
seen people send used chassis away to be galvanised, is this a
worthwhile exercise? What do people charge for doing this? The
whole thing is covered in a liberal coat of that sticky
underseal shit at the moment which I'm not that happy about, I'd
prefer to have a painted finish at least.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

1st thing to say is that this is not legal and if caught, it
could cost you a lot. It is against the law to use the '78
chassis and give that the '71 VIN number.
2nd thing to say it that to make it last one can strip it, drill
a lot of 12 mm holes in it, have it sandblasted and galvanized -
and powder coated industrially..
3rd thing to add is that in Holland you're looking at about €
800 to 1,000 to have it all done.

Or forget powder coating and shop around fior a better price.
I've just had a pile of bits done and paid 70 pounds for
blasting and 130 for galvanising. Total weight was 119Kg.
I doubt if a chassis would be much more than double that, but
easier (and therefore cheaper) to blast.
It's definitely worth doing, IMO.
Get it blasted, then take it home and tidy up any problems that
were revealed. Pressure wash it to thoroughly remove all
remaining grit, then send it for galvanising.

I'd second that. I am having the 107 chassis blasted and galved
but that's only because new ones are stupid money and it needed
no repairs. Arjan is right about point 1, however if there is no
number stamped on the chassis (i.e. it's had new dumbirons)
there's no way to tell. For a series 3 88 I'd go for a new one.
Indeed I did for my 88, a well worthwhile exercise.

The cost of a new galvanised chassis from Richards or similar is
going to be in the region of £1,500. This to me is not an
economical repair besides being way out of my budget. If this
were my only option the Landy would have to go straight on eBay,
someone would pay over the odds for it, break it and use the
logbook to give themselves free tax on something else. I've
owned it for 16 years and it was my first car, so it deserves a
better fate than that.
I'm not 100% on using this chassis yet, but it was local and it
was cheap. It at least will donate some parts to my chassis as
the dumb irons, rear crossmember and various outriggers have
been replaced on it in the past.

I would repair it, if necessary transfer your chassis number
across and Galv it.
Job done. :smile1
Cost to Galv the chassis I believe is £250/£300
A lot cheaper than a £1500 new chassis.

Either go for the galvanising if you can justify the cost, well
worth doing if the chassis is good, but Needs to be cleaned
inside and out which might take some effort and thinking
or if its a bit ropey just paint it and spaff loads of waxoyl
type stuff inside the rails and crossmembers and hope for a
fewmore years out of it
I did this as mine is a bit rough well bodged and welded so not
worth the effort.
Personally i would use the better chassis as a donor just
transfer ther rear 84" of 'parts' on to the original chassis
dumb irons :rolleye0012:

To do a chassis at chesterfield galvanizes is £170 plus vat.

I've never understood how that is illegal, but to rebuild the
car on a brand new chassis IS legal.
