Brake Shoes

Ive had the rear brakes wet from a leaking hub seal and the
other side from wheel cylinder leak. Ive repaired the leaks. I
cleaned the brake shoes with a splash of petrol followed by a
good dose of brake clean in a can. The shoes are clean and dry.
The whole lot is clean and dry as it should be. Whats the std
workshop practice?, clean and re-use the wet shoes or replace
them? Donk

I have cleaned and re-used before it all depends how bad they
are? I do this every year on teh parking brake!! ::)

I've cleaned them up before too. If there's no sign of the oil
contamination and it stops in a straight line after fitting I
wouldn't worry.

I've reused old shoes before. Cleaned up with brake cleaner then
a light rub with emery...

Received wisdom is that the friction heat generated under hard
applications will bring oil to the surface and the brakes will
fail. I've always ignored it... The impression I've formed over
nearly fifty years is that asbestos based linings were more oil
absorbent than modern materials.

I've always just refitted them, never had a problem.
Well, other than new Shitpart seals failing and drenching them
again, before I learned to avoid 'em...

after cleaning with thinners or similar i've usually gently
played a blowtorch flame over the linings to bring any extra oil
to the surface and wipe off with a clean rag
to be honest i think i've usually gone over the top as generally
there's very little oil absorbed and brought back out under heat

A friend of mine swears by sticking them in the dishwasher, not
tried it myself but he has done it a few times and has no
problem stopping!

Seems like its a common thing that goes on, ie wet brakes. Ive
put new seals on the wheel hubs and new cups in the brake
cylinders and within 6 months a couple of brakes got wet. Its
probably the axle breathers not doing the job?
