       Aryette - 1983 S3 88"
By: Violet Vivid Date: May 31, 2013, 4:44 am

       Heya!
Thought should really start a thread for my other S3, Aryette
This was her when I saw her on an ebay ad (was hunting for a
donor to rebuild another 88" I had that had a galv chassis but
       mechanically Everything was FUBAR'ed)

       [URL=

What you can't tell there is the passenger side rear spring
hanger had left the chassis, the rear lights were trailer
lights, wired through the BIGGEST chocolate box connector I've
ever seen!) & the rear tub is about 8 inch deep with mud/manure
       >vom<
but she ran (smokey) and drove (brakes seized)
However upon looking closer realised would be a LOT easier to
fix her up than transplant, soo the other one was sold (after
donating its wheels, tyres & halogens)
Soo started fixing her up, re-wired the entire rear end, full
new brakes, excavated the tub & got her welded and MOT'ed
       :smilewide:
I'm not a fan of truckcabs soo:

       & fun was had:

Ran round with her like that for a couple of months, before the
       gearbox died.
Took that out, got it refurbished & refitted it :)
Another couple of months then the engine started 'tapping'
taking the head off revealed a dropped hotspot, replaced that
       aswell :)
However on a run to Amble (Northumberland) at 50mph she Really
       started knocking :/
Got her home, compression tested & all was fine, and only did it
when she got Really hot. changed all fluids & she was fine for
       about a month.
Took her on a run to Whitby, and was fine all the way till the
moors, then the knock re-appeared. Limped to Whitby, had a
check, couldb't see anything, and didn't need her soo left her
for the time I was there.
coming home the knock was there from the start, and nearly had
to use low range to get up blue bank! :/
Decided the engine was dying, soo carried on. Got all the way
down to Leicester, about 5 miles from home 'BANG!' & the engine
       stopped, wouldn't even turn over!
Anybody want to guess the cause?
       xXx

Hi Violet , was something that relates to crankshaft and
       connecting rods?

I'd say it was either throwing a leg out of bed, or a hotspot
had dropped again causing catastrophic failure.

Yep, threw a rod through the block :o
Have got myself slightly out of sync as before this I'd decided
I needed a safari in my life, and Ary my 109" S3 needed to go
       back to full-tilt.
Soo I acquired a safari roof for Aryette :)

As well as some S/D parabolics (too soft tbh, going to fit H/D
       ones)
Decided that despite having a 2.5 n/a sat in that garage I
wanted to fit a 2.25 (I like them)
Soo acquired one 5mb (was seized)
Then, after hunting ebay & forums (wasn't on here then
       :banghead ) I found a listing, no pics, '5mb engine & spares'
This is what I ended up leaving with:

3 engines, a shitload of spares! ;D (all for sale now, pm me if
you need any 2.25 diesel engine bits!)
Got her re-MOT'ed on that engine (which smoked a little but ran
better than the previous Ever did!) and enjoyed her, including a
trip to Peterborough show for my birthday (ended up bending the
fan into the rad though :wanker: Thanks to Mister bob for
       towing her home!)

       However...
on the way to Manchester towing a smallish trailer (was going
Manc to see my girlfriend, then onto Yorkshire to collect a rear
tub & bulkhead & various other ebay bits lol) got to the A50
turn on the M1 & 'TAPTAPTAPTAP!!' :banghead
soo limped her to the garage I used to work at to get diagnosed,
turns out teh main bearing shells were fubar :2mo5pow:
took that engine out, was going to rebuild it (still am) but
found out the smoke was from a 2cm gap in the rings on Number 4
piston, as well as a 6mm chunk of the edge missing! (Still ran
       great though)
In the end decided to bite the bullet & got the 2.5n/a fitted -
best decision yet! she's a lot more usable, cruises 57-58mph,
       gives 24-26mpg :smilewide:
       & currently looks like this:

       Though extra's coming soon
       :D

Sounds like your introduction to Land Rovers went a similar path
to mine. My first series 3 was a SWB diesel with 3 bearing
engine. That destroyed itself (hotspot dropped out, took a
piston and conrod out, and stamped itself into the block, still
ran for three months like that though!) and ended up going
through three engines, including a Perkins 4 cylinder 3.3 (not a
4.203, earlier than that) which would pull a house down but
would only rev to 3000 which equated to a very noisy and
stressful 35 mph! I finally got hold of a good 5 bearing, that
came attached to a whole series 3 SWB. I stripped that engine
and renewed everything, including the timing. I then spent a
long time getting the timing right, including using some
expensive Snap On gizmo that clamps to an injector pipe (not
mine unfortunately) and allows the use of a timing light. In
went the engine and I have to say after a 1000 miles gentle
bedding in, that engine was superb! It would easily do 65 mph on
the motorway and sit there all day (7.50 tyres, standard drive
train) and returned a steady 29 mpg. [s]if[/s] when my current 3
bearing goes bang I will do the same again I think. I've weighed
up going the Perkins Prima or TDI route and I think on balance
I'd prefer a really good standard 2.25D - I love them too! Why
       complicate things?
Anyway, loving the pics. WHat about the interior? Looks smart.
I forgot to say - I don't know about you, but I got to the point
where I could strip out an engine and get it into my SWB in
around two hours, on my own! From scratch, including removing
       wings etc.

Well the most recent additions to Aryette came in handy last
night on a greenlane or two!

(excuse the idiotic face ::) )
Also think have got the overheating sorted, have fitted a 14"
fan on the rad, and a new water pump. Still gets warm on a
high-speed run, soo think the headgasket might need doing. But
as the valve stem seals need doing too will get my 'spare' head
(off a 19j) refurbed, then straight swap them :)

They are there to catch the pedestrians and direct them onto the
roof where they may enjoy the rest of the journey from a better

I've heard that a few times, but not been stopped for them yet.
       if/when I am I'll remove them :)
I've always thought that yes on something like a disgay they
       would be pedestrian unfriendly
But on a leafer I feel the tonne+ of Land Rover behind them is
       more an issue :smilewide:
