Tonka's Trials, 1982 88"

I figured that since its a new forum and we're supposed to help
populate it with threads I'd post up my truck's story too. Yes,
it has the a very unimaginative name. :P
This is Tonka in the ad I first saw her a year and a half ago.
She is pretty much the same now, although there is more moss on
the roof at the moment...

Used to belong to SWEB, still has bright orange of her orginal
paintwork in the door jams and inside the engine bay and it's
national power sticker on the dashboard!
Anyhow, the general idea was the take up a bit of light
trialling (on the basis that the west country's legal greenlanes
are few and shite). I get a bit concerned that she is too nice
to batter up on the RTV circuit, but its the only real way of
getting off tarmac with much regularity.
Occasional tyro attendance is all well until the MOT last week.
It didn't go well. Both front headlamps too low, the windscreen
washer has stopped working, and my fog lamp tell tale seems to
have broke. Oh, and my brakes are shite, in the 'throw you in
the hedge when you try to stop' kind of way.
On the upside the advisory items are so amusing I though I had
to share them. Both nearside and offside, "Body has slight
displacement of the body relative to the chassis"
I mean really? Its a land-rover. Its supposed to be like that.

How do get on in the RTVs? Are there many leafers doing it, or
are you up against boingys?

Personally I'm not doing that well, although this is mostly due
to me getting lost and running over canes than any fault of the
vehicle (big gay wheels mean traction is very good). The
Somerset and Wiltshire LRC does have a decent leafer appearance
at it's events, a 300tdi series 2 is a consistent good performer
though and there are appearances from a couple of series 1s, and
one mentalist who trialed a 101. It was majestic.
Last tyro saw a chap turn up with a 11a keen to get involved.
I think that they generally keep the class alive. Just about.

if your foglight is still giving you hassle, check the switch.
Mine looked fine but didnt work, and I spent a while having the
light unit apart making sure it wasnt rusted inside. Upon taking
the vee panel off the dash and waggling the wires in the back of
it the foglight worked again.

The fog light works fine, but the switch doesn't light up to
tell you the fog lamp is on. It's prob only a bust bulb I need
to get in there and sort it out.
Seeing as I now have a 10 day old daughter to look after this
may take a while!

Hymirl good to hear of your new arrival :thumbs: my new
arrival is 12 now wiv attitude innit ( apologies to the
moderators yoof slang required to illustrate point ;D)
Kids are a real blessing but you can't drive them.... :) when
the new arrival is safely in the family home... sneak off to the
garage and make time for the Landy before the new arrival
becomes more expensive ::)

Landy Phil, where did the course go after that in your pic? What
it upwards or down to the left (of pic) ?

Ok, time for an update. Daughter is now 6 months and most
important the days when she slept all day and screamed all night
are over. So playing occasionally with toys goes back on the
cards. I have a few pictures to stick up though.

In line for scrutineering, at the first TYRO last summer. At
this point I think the burger van had more aggressive tyres than
I did.

Attending boxing day TYRO, tyre situation fixed with some nice
big kayman malestas... much the same as Insta Turbo Special
Tracks but mildly cheaper.

This summer's tyro, the mens division (no power steering or
curly springs allowed!)

Doing well here, managed a respectable mid table finish, um,
beating some teenage girls in discos. Although its somewhat
galling that they go steering around the course one handed and
get a shunt.
So looks like time to man up and start doing RTV, this requires
fitting forward recovery points and second springs on the carb
and a few other odds and ends to sort out.
Currently its working harder than it has for some time as I've
remodelling the garden, the previous owner liked gravel, while
its low effort to maintain the daughter is going to start
running about at some point and grass would be better to fall
down on! Luckily a friend quite fancies all the gravel but has
nothing to move it with.
2.25 petrol seems to still happily drag a ton of gravel in a
trailer, although fuel economy is somewhat... um, awful. Oh
well. A few more runs and that should be that. Amusingly I've
managed to borrow a trailer about as old as the land rover.
