Stopped by the rozzas

Okay, I was sort of expecting this to happen at some point,
whether it becomes regular we'll have to see...
Driving out of Broomhill in Sheffield towards Fullwood one
evening, probubly just gone midnight, nothing was behind me at
the lights but a Volvo must have cought me up from somewhere and
lucally stuck the blues on before I'd managed to exceed the
speed limit (I'm not into speeding but I wasn't hanging about
and with the neadle wobble I don't always back off that much if
its quiet and its somewhere around 50km/h mark.
So, we stop, he attempts to open the passengers door and then
tells me if we could have a word in the back of his car.
Once childlocked inside the Volvo he gives me the usual speach
they are often stolen and they like to be sure, is it mine...
Then we come to the moneyshot, "Just want to ask you a question,
its comming up on the computer that the MOT expired in
September, have you have a more recent one than that?"
"No, that sounds about right, the last one would have expired in
September"
"Err, right," He says and you can see him trying to work out
what to do about this little problem.
Me "It doesn't actully need one anymore."
Copper (presumably a traffic cop or he'd be driving a Focus?)
"Right and why is that?"
"Well they changed the law last year, due to an EU directive,
Anything built before 1960 doesn't need an MOT, thats a 1956
model. Think it came in on the err, 19th of November? It was
around that date. and its been off the road since last summer
anyway."
The copper ponders this, then clutches his shoulder mounted
radio, then anounses "I'm going to have to let you go,
somethings come up and I'm going to have to respond, thanks for
your time and have a good evening", he rushes round the car to
open my door, reminds me my passengers door isn't shut properly
(I shut it again and pretended that made all the difference, it
doesn't pop open it just doesn't feal like a modern car door)
before doing a 3 point turn with the blues on and then driving
off fairly normally and turning them off at the end of the
street.
I guess that means that not all coppers know about current MOT
requirments and they aren't too keen on admiting they don't know
something when someone confidently and politely explains
something. I was expecting him to go ask on the radio and me to
have to google some evidence but aparenly not. A shame as I
sort of wanted to say they'd dropped the MOT requirment for
older historic vehicles because alot of the oficals wern't of
the rules that apply to them, though its probubly best that
didn't happen as he might have realised I was refering to
himself as much as someone overkeen on using the emissions probe
on an MOT.
Anyone else had this? Was thinking I might go for an MOT every
other year (thats something the goverment considered for all
cars) but if this happens a lot life might be easyer with a
ticket?

Got a link to that by any chance? Think mine runs out in June or
July so would be useful to have!

My 1998 van has never had an MOT (exempt as it's an
'electrically propelled goods vehicle') and I've never been
stopped.
I've passed working roadside NPR vans and been followed by
plenty of traffic cars (I think they all have NPR now) but never
been flagged up.
So it does look like it's just a problem with the new rules for
pre 1960 - perhaps someone forgot to click 'Submit' when they
changed the program :rolleye0012:

I have been stopped by the police in Poland with 1969 2a tray
back plastered in mud coming back from work in the forest they
pulled me up and said where have you been? in the forest
officer, why? because I am a forrester I cut trees down etc and
showed him my saws in the rear locker, he then asks why the
steering wheel is on the wrong side? because its an English land
rover sir, where are the documents to the vehicle?, at home sir,
why? because they will get wet and muddy in the forest sir, take
him back to my house showed him the documents (only the v5 had
no insurance no tax no mot nothing) the copper turned the v5
upside down inside out not knowing what he was reading and said
very well thank you for your time and let me go. I have had
another running with polish police I was towing a 109 on an
Aframe the following police tried pulling the folling vehicle
for being to close after repeated explanations he let me go why
are coppers thick ???
