vibrations

Evening fellas,
my S3 has developed a vibration that starts at around 35MPH, but
then stops again at around 45MPH.
it only does it while accelerating...
I have checked all the UJs on the props, 1 had a 'little' play
but nothing that I would call excessive lol, but I replaced it
anyway... still vibrates
the wheels have been balanced fairly recently so im ruling that
out...
the fact it stops at 45mph just confuses me???
I have been told to check the swivels, which I will do tomorrow
but Is there anything else to check??
thanks guys and girls
Dean

I also get vibrations, not nice at 70mph, I think it's my
Security x-plies, I'm sure they're not rated for much over
50mph.
Can you borrow another set of tyres, & see if it makes a
difference?

If the carcass is deforming when driving you could get this - it
may have been getting worse gradually but you might not have
noticed anything* - try raising and then lowering your tyre
pressure by 5psi (say) [providing you are running safe
pressures] and see if it makes any difference. We had old tyres
on our skoda and we had a lot of noise/vibration (thought it was
a wheel bearing to start with) problem solved with new boots!
Anyone with more experience?
*The nature of a land rover means that you may not have noticed
any slight extra noise/vibration. Also your tyre pressures may
have changed making the issue worse or you may have damaged a
tyre without being aware of it.

Kev, as you increase your speed, the heat generated will
increase - the maximum speed rating on your tyres will have a
margin of error but I wouldn't like to be doing motorway speeds
on a 50mph rated tyre :o

Sounds like wheel balance, have you lost a weight off one of the
wheels?

wheel balancing is not really needed until you get over about
50. I have none of my balanced since it is not really necessary

If you can safely get all four wheels off the ground, run it
slow in a low gear and look for 'run out' on the tyres and/or
rims. In 2wd you can do the back wheels one at a time but to to
do the fronts like that you'd have to temporarily remove the
rear prop. Sorry-don't mean to state the bleeding obvious!

Necessary or not, im having them balanced in half hour as i
checked the wheels and found about an 8inch clean spot on my rim
where, i presume, there used to be weights 8-)
Its just not something i concidered as they were only recently
done...
Cheers for the heads up and i'll let you know this evening
