Thoroughly miserable...

Looks like my little foray into Landy ownership may have been a
short one. I have been driving it for less than a month, and it
has pretty much killed my back. I had a problem with a leaky
disc in my lower back last year, and it seems to be returning
with a vengeance. Cant even get into the beast at the moment,
and on the two occasions where I've managed it, I got to the
first roundabout, and had to come home. I am not a happy bunny -
staring down the barrel of a quick sale and replacement with
something dull and soulless.

What seats have you got in it hun?
Also which springs?
There are some quite easy upgrades to be made with (fare I say
it) later model seats, and soft-duty parabolics :)

In my limited experience, the later type full-back shaped
station wagon seats do make a big difference - not only in terms
of general comfort, but also lumbar support, over the earlier
style flat seats.
If yours already has plush seats and is still unbearable, then a
proper memory foam/chiropractic padding cushion may also help.
We use these in the gliders I fly to protect the pilot's spine
in the event of a hard landing, and they really do work
brilliantly (I know this from a jarring experience having fucked
up a touchdown without one :haha: ). You can buy them in a
mixture of thickness and firmness and customise to suit:

I think if it is the choice between selling or keeping the landy
you can justify fitting any seat that works, not sure if i will
get banned for saying this but i would be looking at newer more
comfortable types of land rover seat from something which has
rusted to death and donated its engine an is an anagram of "sico
d1"

I've found the make of seat can make a big difference. I did
have britpart seat bases and after an hour of driving my
lower back would be killing me. Changed to exmoor trim at
xmas,now no problems.

^ As said if it's do or die then there's plenty of scope for
seats,springs and shocks to make it a comfy ride. My trialer
(when it was road legal) was as comfy as any coiler on and off
the road in terms of ride quality.

It has a retro fitted, and pretty comfy seat. Its the wrestling
to keep it going in a relatively straight line that is doing me
in. As soon as I go over 30mph, it starts throwing itself all
over the road!! I had a mechanic out over the weekend, and he
said there was nothing wrong with it, so its me thats the
problem!!

I've had a few back issues* over the years, & I'm comfy spending
all day in the saddle using these slightly gay seats.
*I also have a loft full of back issues of Pork Pie Monthly.

You need a mechanic who knows Series Land Rovers, or a member
near you who will have a look.
There's absolutely no reason at all why it should be "throwing
itself all over the road" if everything is tight and the
tracking is right :-?
Now if you'd said you were struggling at parking speeds, there's
not a lot you could do (other than a P38 power steering
conversion :rolleye0012:) but once rolling, a series LR is no
harder to steer and keep in a straight line than a modern car
:thumbs:

Its fine up to about 30 - then it gets scary! The guy who came
out was a friend of a friend, who has worked on Series
Landrovers before. I personally dont think he experienced its
full wrth at higher speeds, because he only drove it round the
block, and I'd be surprised if he was able to get above 25mph on
that particular stretch of road - plus its a very smooth bit of
road - its when we start negotiating lumpy bits that it starts
diving from side to side and the steering wheel gets snatchy.
