       Theoretical build, leafer recovery

       Heya all!
A conversation over facebook reminded me of something I wanted
to do in my past, open a off-road site.
Which got me thinking, I'd need to build a recovery/marshal
truck (or two) Obviously leaf-sprung, as every site & its mother
has a chopped 'donor' on stilt springs :banghead
The obvious would be a 101, but the pricing of them rules them
       out
       Soo what would people build?
My thoughts are probably a perkins 4.203 diesel for sheer
tugging grunt, in a LWB with a S2a box, 1-ton shackles & HD
parabolics, and some practically floatation tyres.
Then also it'd be a 'trayback' with a HUGE hydraulic winch on
the back to pull out the boingers :smilewide:
possibly also either 'Donor' axles (converted to leafs!) or
volvo c303 porthole axles. Though I'd want it looking quite
standard from the outside, soo maybe not trayback but a truck
       cab :)
       whats your thoughts?
       :)
       xXx

By the time you've done some of those mod's, you could have
       bought a 101 GS with a Nokken...bases covered!
When I get 'round to doing the 2B, it'll have the engine of
which you speak, plus a pukka Land-Rover winch perched on the
back. Then, with the 900 shoes and the ENV widetrack axles, I
fancy all I'll be missing is something to recover.

Trouble is the nokken winch isn't that powerful, being only
rated at 2t. But it does have a usefully long cable.
If I was running an off road site, I think I'd either be running
a mog as a recovery truck or use it as a excuse to get a big toy
like a zil or tatra or maybe even one of those fodens that Kev
       is peddling.

As well as using 1 ton mounts, you could also put the axles
under the springs for extra clearance for swamp tyres.
You could even build a replica Forest Rover/Cuthbertson/129 if
you want to really make a statement and embarrass boingies
       :smilewide:
As much as I admire the 4203, I wonder if a step up to the
V8.510 would work without blowing the drivetrain into itty bitty
       pieces

Springs-over on the back of a 2B, WC. Check your tech!
And it's a recovery vehicle hypothesis, not some musings over a
time-trials motor. Something with enormous low-end torque like a
Perky, through the right box, will not be beaten when it comes
to dragging dead-weights under constant control.
As good as a V8 is, with grunt right through the range, it's a
damned hot engine which will waste no time over-cooking with a
       bad chef controlling the oven.

I was labouring under the impression that the 510 tractor engine
was a pair of normal Perky diesels joined at the hip, and
therefore thought it would have similar slow but torquey
characteristics. Evidently I was wrong, but I appreciate your
point about the heat generated by such a large motor in any
       case!

As much as I love the Fodens, with their awesome winches, crane
and musical Rolls motor, they weigh in at 22 tons with all the
gear. Maybe a DAF 4x4 with a winch?
That said some of us will know of a certain traybacked ex-TACR
109 on 900x16s which would go bloody anywhere, I think if you
plonked an old school winch on the front it would be ideal.
       I think you'll find >Htlr< a V8 Perk is a tad more than a pair
of four bangers joined up though no doubt they share some bits.

You weren't wrong about the make of the engine, Matt; indeed, I
was only surprised you didn't suggest the TV8.510. You're just
wrong about it being suitable for this recovery
purpose...although I'll give that your showboating of knowledge
regarding engines did also come with your own caveat that it
       would murderify a L-R box.
You'll be suggesting a fucking RR Merlin next.

We all live and learn gents - its has pointed out that my
recollection seems to be incorrect, and I can only apologise
again for not having a perfect memory, having read about the
engine some years ago. I consider my knowledge on the subject of
       vintage diesels duly corrected.
