series three steering box round disc thing

hi folks
iam rebuilding the steering as part of my chassis swap. ive
droped the steering box back into the chassis and was about to
re-fit the round disc that fits onto the bottom .that is secured
by 4 bolts into the chassis when i noticed that the holes for
the bolts have not had the threads cut in the new chassis to
acomidate the four bolts . this got me thinking as to what this
round disc with 4 bolts to secure it is for as the steering box
is secured by two bolts into the chassis at the top .so iam
thinking is this just to stop muck getting up between the
steering box and the chassis or is there some other more
imporant reason
any thought much appreciated.

IF by steering box you mean the idler/Relay
THEN ....It's there to stop the bottom of the steering
IDLER/RELAY from slapping about in the chassis as you drive
along,You get a fair amount of torque and bump steer through the
relay and thus it needs to be located firmly .

What Ian said. THere's a lot of play in the two bolts on top of
the chassis that allows the relay to wobble about making the
steering more vague than normal. the ring centres the relay and
holds it all nice and secure.

Yep, make a BIG difference if the bottom of the relay is not
tight; even a tiny movement there makes the steering vague ::)
Oh, and if the retaining ring isn't really tight on the relay,
the old-timer's trick of snotting 3 or 4 blobs of weld on the
inside of the ring works a treat ;D
