3 point static harness

Im thinking the only way to safely fit seatbelts to my 88 is a
harness
Im not keen on my current enertia setup as having a truck cab
canvas there is no way of having a solid upper mount
I could fit old style shoulder breaking statics but if going
that route I may as well fit 3 point static harnesses
Ive had a brief look about and seen securon 605 and 628 may suit
my needs, the thing is I cant see any difference between them
except one set is nearly double the price of the other
Anyhow,those out there who know
A. what the differences are and which would be best suited to an
88 please let me know
b. Fitting advice would be helpful too

If you weren't so tall, Pete, I'd suggest you fitted inertias as
I once did to 'Tommy', before I decided to simply cease wearing
seatbelts and replaced them with the
'easilytuckawayableundertheseats' statics.
I put the inertia unit at the bottom of the seat-box, actually
bolting it through that with a big, MOT-passable spreader plate
behind. This only worked because there were no original seatbelt
brackets in there at the time and it just fitted 'twixt box and
non-carded door; but it does need to be bolted absolutely
spot-on vertical, or it will not run on the roll. It was also a
real twat to fit on the driver's side, as there ain't much of a
space between the seat-box and fuel tank.
The other end of the belt, I secured at the point on the seat
bulkhead which ought to have a small threaded-in turret piece
with a hole through it and a small D-ring bow-shackle, having
once (perhaps still on 'CYD') been the lash-point for the
statics.
It all worked and even passed the test at a pretty strict UK MOT
station I used to use. But I was always very aware of the thing
doing a sharp up and down over my shoulder, which at 5'10" was
an itch for me and would probably be excruciatingly irritating
for your Jolly Green Giant stature.
Just an idea.

Hasn't one of the Belgian chaps on here got an 88 with upper
mounts bolted to a frame affair that sits on top of the cappings
at shoulder height?

IMHO you really need to mount any over the shoulder belts/
harnesses need to be mounted high enough to limit any damage to
the shoulder(s) during a shunt or sudden stop. I had harnesses
and low back bucket seats in a mini and ended up with a broken
collar bone in an accident. Normally harnesses go through high
backed seats which stop this problem. So if you have normal
seats in your Landrover I would suggest a bar behind you to lift
the harnesses up so they don't snap your collarbone(s). Just
remember to pad it as well because what goes forward in an
accident also comes back at a rapid rate of knots usually
smashing into what is behind it - that's why I sit on a Recaro
high back seat and have inertia reel seat beats on Fungus- it
might not be original but its comfortable and safe.

OK, my fault, I didn't give the full picture
CYD has never had belts and I wouldn't have fitted any apart
from the fact my 6yr old daughter likes a bit of laning
I have inertia belts fitted with spreader plates etc but the top
mount is a pair of those military racking brackets turned
sideways and bolted to the capping (because of the truck cab
canvas),whilst this does give me a raised point and has passed a
couple of MOTs, it doesn't have any bracing in the forwards
direction and would simply bend or snap
I have debender high back seats fitted so was thinking of just
bolting a 3 point harness to the capping behind each seat.
Wheres LandyPhil when you need him, surely he has
harnessesessessess? :)

Pete, dunno if this helps but the lightweight has a bar that
lifts the upper mounts that is bloody solid and looks quite a
simple thing to fab. Despite it looking a bit homemade I'm told
it was a pukka fitment :

Another good option for a canvas top is a cut down 101 roll bar.
I recently found out the MOD did this to a few and fitted them
to lightweights and they look the bollocks, give a solid upper
mount, rollover protection and work as a hoodstick into the
bargain.

I have seen the raised seat belt bar you have in the
lightweight,actually there are some for sale on the blag, but
they wont fit with a truck cab canvas.
Funny you should mention the 101 rollbar as I had thought of
this having seen one on ebay some time ago from a dealer up
north somewhere,sadly I cant remember who it was and I'm sure it
was collection only anyway
TBH i wasn't sure of the width of the 101 bars, if its the twin
hoop bar i think it is :confused:

The later Lightweights did have a high level fitting for the
seat belts and it is similar to that one but...I think yours
might actually be a home made copy of the Lightweight one as the
'proper' one is a lot more substantial and actually bolts onto
the chassis like a roll cage would. I've got one in mine - I'll
see if I can find a piccy of it. I think the later 109's also
used something that was similar to the Lightweight set up but
not exactly the same - maybe yours is one of them?
